ST. ALBANS SWIMMING BATH.
SCHEME DELAYED BY NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr. H. T. J. Thacker's notice of motion to rescind the decision on the estimates made by the Christchurch City Council on Tuesday night has delayed the scheme for building a swimming bath at St. Albans. The estimates as passed on Tuesday provide for a grant of £135 to cover the cost of fencing the site for the bath, and for another £135 next year to cover the cost of installing the water supply. Cr. Thacker's notice of motion is to rescind the decision to transfer £15,000 from the funds of the Municipal Electricity Department to the general account, and to refer the estimates for the current year back to the finance committee for further consideration. The St. Albans Park and Recreation Committee, which is prepared to grant a loan of £345 towards the bath scheme, met last evening, when a letter explaining the situation was received from the Town Clerk, Mr J. S. Neville. The letter stated that no definite decision could be given about the City Council's grant at present, The meeting of the park committee, over which Mr R. B. Dalley presided, decided that it was not prepared to support the bath scheme financially until a definite decision had been made by the City Council. The Canterbury Centre of the I\ew Zealand Swimming Association wants a definite assurance by August 2 that the bath will be completed in time for the New Zealand swimming championships next year. As the city council will not meet until August 14 the centre may not receive its assurance, in which case, it is stated, the championships may be decided elsewhere.
