NEW BRIGHTON FORESHORE.

••*0 THE «DITOB or THB FRE39 Sir, —Kindly permit me, as a resident Of New Brighton, to express an opinion, which may enlighten your correspondent who writes under the nom-de-plume of "Modern," on the subject of the so-called improvement of the New Brighton foreshore. I beg to suggest that he is wrong when he infers that the objections have come from those who have no knowledge of watering-places abroad or in other parts of New Zealand. On the contrary, from what X liave gathered from many objectors, it is largely the knowledge of the unfortunate experience that has befallen many of these places in the hands of selfstyled "progressive" individuals which prompts them to endeavour to prevent New Brighton becoming the subject of a similar calamity. If "Modern's" views were as up to date as his nom-de-plume he would know that the most modern thought tends towards preserving the natural state of resorts and beauty spots, rather that commercialising them and cluttering them up with buildings, etc., etc., as he would apparently prefer to do; and in this respect I think the New Brighton Borough Council is to be congratulated on its foresight in taking the stand it has done, and for its apparent determination to profit by the lamentable results manifested in other places. I agree with the suggestion that the bathing facilities, from the point of view of a visitor, could be improved, and this could be done without further interference with the natural state of the foreshore. Some of that portion that has already been spoilt by the activities of previous councils could be used to provide a site for a municipal undertaking. Residents of New Brighton generally want the borough to progress, and it would be most illogical to expect to attract visitors by depriving them of the use of that part of the borough that they came down to enjoy.—Yours. etC " ULTRA MODERN.
