CONGRATULATIONS TO LOVELOCK.
- MR FORBES SAID TO HAVE SENT TELEGRAM. Through the Leader of the Opposition (Mr 11. E. Holland, M.P.) Dr. Guy" Haskins, of Christchurch, has been advised that the Prime Minister has sent congratulations to J. E. Lovelock, the New Zealand Rhodes Scholar, on his performance in lowering the world's record for the mile. Dr. Haskins had previously reproached the Acting-Prime Minister (the lit. Hon. J. G. Coates) for his failure to send the congratulations of the New Zealand Government to Lovelock. Mr Holland has written to Dr. Haskins as follows: "As I intimated in my telegram of July 23, 1 wired Mr Coates urging that a Government message of congratulation should be forwarded to Mr J. E. Lovelock, and asking to be associated as Leader of the Opposition in whatever message was sent. To-day I received the following telegraphic x-eply from Mr Coates: 'Your telegram received. I should have been glad to have associated you as Leader of the Opposition with the Government message of congratulation to J. E. Lovelock, 'out the Prime Minister and the Olympic Association have extended congratulations, and it is not proposed to send any additional and duplicating message. The association, of which I am vice-president,- and the sports bodies throughout the Dominion,' have every reason to be proud of Lovelock's wonderful achievement; and the people of the West Coast can rightly be proud o£ him and the laurels he has won. The result of Lovelock's efforts at the International Games in Italy in September will be awaited with the keenest interest.'"
