Field-Marshal Muto, Japan's Ambassador to Manchukuo, who had almost dictatorial power, died this morning after a brief illness. He was 05 years old. SIR RICHARD WALDIEGRIFFITH. It is reported that he" lost a fortune in a Chechoslovakian lawsuit. [Sir Richard John Waldie-Griffith was the third baronet and was formerly a captain in the second Dragoon Guards. He was married three times. He leaves no heir.] MR J. M. HAILES. The death has occurred of Mr Joseph Mary Hailes, a pioneer of the I Kaikoura district, at the age of 78. A son of Mr and Mrs Walter I Hailes, Mr Hailes. was born in Staffordshire, England, in July, 1854, and came to New Zealand with his parents in 1863 in the sailing ship Edward Thornell. The ship struck the Fifeshire Rock, at the entrance to Nelson Harbour, but all the passengers landed safely. After remaining at Nelson for some time, he moved to Wairau, where the family engaged in farming pursuits, and subsequently came to Kaikoura in the vessel Ruby. Together with his father and brothers he engaged in road-making for the Provincial Government, and was given land in lieu of wages, by which method Mr Hailes acquired his present property. He lived in Kaikoura for 57 years, but took no part in public affairs. He attended school under Mr Williams, at Ludstone, the building later being known as "The Swaggers' Rest" He possessed a wonderful knowledge of the old band of pioneers, of which he was Kaikoura's surviving representative. Although of a retiring nature, he had a most genial disposition which won him many friends, and he was held in high esteem by all with whom he came in contact. He is survived by his widow, two sons— Messrs Felix and Tate Hailes—-two brothers —Messrs Felix Hailes (Anderson's Bay, Dunedin), Richard Hailes (Hikurangi, Whangarei), and one sister—Mrs A. S. Ward, Maxwell road, Blenheim. MR F. J. SINGLE. (PRISS ASSOCIMTOK TVUQBUf.) WAIROA, July 27. The death has occurred of Mr F. J. Single, aged 60; one of the district's most prominent citizens. He took an active part in local politics, being for many years a member of the Borough Council. He was also actively associated with practically every type of sport in Wairoa. For many years he was proprietor of the ferry.
