She was inhaling at the time,; and tipped the boiling liquid over her; face and hands. Her condition is de ■, scribed as being not serious. • \ '' THUMB GASHED BY SAW . A painful injury was received by Mr L. Gillespie, of 91 Tennyson street, . yesterday, when a thumb was severely ■: gashed by a circular saw. Following a tall into a tank eight feet deep, containing almost boiling water, the manager of the Rangitikei dairy factory at Bulls, Mr James Smillie, aged 48, died in hospital at Marton early this morning. ; On Saturday Mr Smillie was engaged in melting sugar in a tank on the roof of the factory, the tank being half full of boiling water, when the platform collapsed, precipitating Mr Smillie up to his waist. Clinging to the edge, be was pulled to safety ! by two helpers. He was then in a terrible condition, though still conscious. He leaves a widow and two ■ children.
