DESPERATE CONDITIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA.
EFFECT OF LONG DROUGHT. (Received July 26, 11.10 p.m.; MELBOURNE, July 26. According to a letter received from South Africa by Senator Guthrie, conditions there are desperate, owing to the prolonged drought. Twelve million sheep have been lost, and men wealthy a few years ago are now ruined. Farms are being sold for 5d an acre. Dairy cattle are unsaleable, and feed is unprocurable.
