NEWFOUNDLAND'S FUTURE.
- ♦ POSSIBLE LOSS OF STATUS. AMERICAN UEPOKT. ST. JOHNS (Newfoundland), July 25. "As Lord Amulree has not submitted any recommendations I have no comment to make," declared the Premier, Mr F. C. Alderdice, today when advised of the report from London, published in New York stating: "Newfoundland will temporarily lose her status as a self-governing colony if the British Government approves the report of Lord Amulree's commission.''
PREMATURE ANNO UN CEMENT. MONTREAL, July 26. Sir William Stavert, a member of Lord AmuJree's commission, characterised the New York story as "premature." stating that so far as he knew no report had been presented. [The commission was appointed in February to examine the future of Newfoundland, and, in particular, to report on its financial situation. It assembled in Newfoundland early in March, and its report was to be ready by July 1, when an interest payment was due. Lord Amulree was chairman, the other members being Dr. McGrath, nominated by the Canadian Government, Sir William Stavert, nominated by the Newfoundland Government, with Mr P. A. Clutterbuck of the Dominions Office, as secretary.!
