THE ECONOMIC CONFERENCE.
DEARTH OF RESULTS. LORD BLEDISLOE DISAPPOINTED. (w:ssa ASSOCIATION TELECn.MI.; AUCKLAND, July 20. Profound disappoinment with "the inconclusiveness and poverty of the output of the World Economic Conference" was expressed by the Governor-General, Lord Bledislo'in an address to the Auckland Creditmen's Club. "Mountains; have laboured, and jbrought forth a mouse,'' said liis Excellency. "I decline, however, to describe the result as a failure, for the friendly meeting in one place of the duly accredited representatives of 66 nations has caused the mutual difficulties and obstacles to the economic rehabilitation of the world to be meticulously explored, and their exploration is a half-way house on the road tp their ultimate removal. This is. a ground for confidence and hope. "Equally regrettable is the transient but acute disagreement which has arisen between New Zealand and the Mother Country, born of apprehension on both sides regarding the future, trend of their mutual trade. It is said in the best of books that 'perfect love casteth out fear.' It is to be earnestly hoped that mutual confidence founded upon the unbroken amity of the past will be rapidly re-established, for its maintenance is absolutely vital to the economic existence of this Dominion, and any protracted impairment of it on some specific trade issue is calculated to affect materially' the wider range of this country's future industrial and financial interests. Far-sighted statesmen on both sides recognise the paramount importance of this aspect of the problem and merit the backing of all patriots of wide vision and commercial acumen. "Among nations and individuals alike, confidence is the touchstone of credit, and credit is the lubricant of honest and successful trade.
