MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. ACCLIMATISATION. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society was held on Tuesday evening, when Mr A. O. Pilbrow presided. Letters were received from the North Canterbury and South Canterbury societies advising that they were not in favour of the Ashburton society's proposals to open the fishing season on October 14 and to increase the takeable size of fish in the Rangitata and Rakaia rivers to 12 inches. The chairman said he regretted that the neighbouring societies had not given this matter more favourable consideration, as data and reports received from the Freshwater Research Committee pointed to the fact that a great number of flsh taken by anglers had not had an opportunity to spawn, and by increasing the takeable size of fish in the big rivers it vould give them an opportunity to spawn at least once before being taken.

The ranger reported that there were approximately 400,000 brown trout ova in the hatchery. The North Canterbury society wrote asking what stocking the Ashburton society intsnded to carry out in the Rakaia river this season. It was resolved to a3vise the North Canterbury society that it was i&Jended to liberate 100,000 brown trout fry in the Rakaia river. It was also decided to liberate 100,000 fry in the Rangitata river. It was decided that the council make a tour of inspection of the society's three fishing camps next month. St. Andrew's Spring: Fair. It was decided to hold a spring fair on October 12 (afternoon and evening) at a meeting of members and adherents of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Tuesday evening. The Rev. R. S. Watson presided. Several committees were set up to make preliminary arrangements. Literary and Social Club. The weekly meeting of St. Stephen's Literary and Social Club was held on Tuesday evening, when the president (Mr S. M. Cassidy) presided. The possibility of holding a dance to augment the club's fund was discussed and the fixing of a date was held over until the next meeting. It was decided to write to the Bushside club suggesting a ping-pong match between the two clubs in September. The Rev. A. J. Petrie gave a short outline of the work of the Church Army, and its work during the coming mission. He appealed to members of the club to attend the Procession of Witnesses to-morrow evening. Impromptu speeches were given by Messrs Rollinson, S. M. Cassidy, and the Rev. A. J. Petrie. The evening was concluded with games. Ashburton Boxing Association. A meeting of the Ashburton Boxing Association was held on Tuesday evening, when Mr H. D. Johnston presided. A circular was received from the New Zealand Boxing Association giving information regarding the New Zealand championships to be held at Blenheim in September. Correspondence was received from Alan Campbell, Billy Sullivan, Stan. Brookes, and J. Voifeh regarding contests. It

decided to hold over the question of a professional bout until after the MidCanterbury championships. The president proposed that a benefit tournament in aid of Mr Keith Cowan, who was seriously ill in the hopsital, be staged on Saturday evening. He said that several of the boxers who participated at the last tournament were willing to appear. It was decided to hold a tournament in the stadium, when fights between the winners of the novice toui'nament and probably some boys from Christehurch would be staged. As this would be a benefit function, it was agreed that only competitors and workers be allowed free admission. The fallowing officials were appointed:—Referee, Mr H. Dillon: judges, Messrs J. H. Murdoch; official seconds, Messrs C. Stock and C. Shearman. Basketball Association. The Ashburton Basketball Association met on Tuesday evening, whea the president, Mr R. J. Thompson, preS *Thc newly-formed Chcrtsey Women's Basketball Club wrote asking permission to play in the nine-a-side tournamcnts to be held in August. It was decided to grant the club permission to play in the junior grade, provided it affiliated witfi the association. The Canterbury Association wrote accepting August 5 for the representative match at Ashburton. It was decided to play the match on the Tecnnical school ground if the weather was unfavourable. . It was resolved to nominate Mr o. G. Macfarlane as a referee for the New Zealand tournament, to be held at Gisborne. The executive resolved to accept tne invitation of the South Canterbury Association to play a representative match at Timaru on August 12 or 19. It was agreed to complete all grades of the knock-out competition on Saturday. Women's Hockey. A meeting' of the management committee of the Ashburton Ladies' Hockey Association was held on Tuesday evening, when Mr E. Davidson presided. The chairman reported that arrangements were almost completed for the "back to school days" dance, the object of which was to raise funds to send the representative team to the annual New Zealand tournament. He asked for the wholehearted support of all hockey players. Permission was granted the Methven Club to send a team to the Geraldine tournament on August 24, and also to hold an open tournament at Methven in September. It was decided to send a representative team to Timaru on August 19 to play South Canterbury. Golf.
