The heaviest rainfall for three years fell on Saturday and Sunday at New causing floods in a number of places and other damage. For the 24 hours ended at 7.30 a.m. on Sunday, the rainfall was 2.53 in. On Sunday afternoon the water level at the intake at Lake Mangamohoe, from which the town's water supply and electric power come, rose from a normal height of 2ft 6in to 17ft. The Mangatuku stream, flowing through New Plymouth, caused considerable damage. One house was imperilled by a large sUp a few yards away. Very heavy rain also fell in the Ohura district, which was isolated from road communication, both sides being blocked. On the Stratford Main Trunk line the Okahukura tunnel was blocked by a slip, and the Tuhua low-level bridge was under water at Inglewood. The phenomenal fall of 5.01 in occurred in the 24 hours preceding 9 a.m. yesterday, the heaviest fall since 1921. The main north road to Auckland from New Plymouth was blocked for some time by a large slip at Tongaporutu. Flooding occurred at Uruti, Pio Pio, and other parts of the road.
