TRAMWAY SERVICE.

CONGRATULATIONS RECEIVED BY BOARD. /" - Congratulations on various aspects of its services formed" a large part |of the correspondence received by j the Christchurch Tramway Board at its meeting yesterday. Members remarked that such letters were a pleasant relief to the normal business of the board. The letters were from the Wanderers' Tramping Club and the Youth Hostels Association expressing thanks for the provision of early trams on Sunday mornings, from the Burwood Progressive Association, thanking the board for erecting a seat at Golf Links road, from the Lake Sumner road public works camp for a gift of a ticket punch, and from Mr G. T. Jones, of St. Albans, congratulating the board on its one-man tram services. Mr Jones, in his letter, mentioned the comfort of the one-man cars, and the courtesy of the drivers. He had noted, also, that where many people secured free rides on. other types of car at rush times, this was not happening with the one-man cars. "It is rather miraculous, after hearing these letters, to note that the board's receipts have gone down by £643," said Mrs E. R. McCombs. Mr E. H. Andrews said that, with Mr A. A. McLachlan, he had been delayed on the way to the board meeting by listening to another verbal congratulation concerning the one-man cars. A Riccarton resident who had travelled on one of these cars when it was put on that line on a recent Sunday had expressed his appreciation of the comfort of that type of car. • "If the ordinary two-man cars were made as comfortable as the one-man cars they would be just as popular," said Mrs McCombs.
