PROVINCIAL BANDS' ASSOCIATION.

♦ THE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Canterbury Provincial Bands' Association was held in Derry's band room. Mr J. Noble, the president, was in the chair and delegates were present from the following bands:—Christchurch Municipal (Mr E. Hunter), Woolston (Mr J. Turner), New Brighton (Messrs J. Nuttall and G. Pepper), Rangiora (Messrs H. T. Oates and C. Ironside), Ashburton (Messrs H. J. T. Osborne and E. R. Hopwood), Stanmore (Messrs W. J. M. Gosney and E. E. Taylor), Ellesmere (Messrs L. J. Ashton and L. C Vicary), First Canterbury Regiment (Messrs C B. Fowler and H. L. Mason), Christchurch Scottish Pipe (Mr R. L. Will), Ashburton Pipe (Mr R. E. Fisher), Christchurch Scottish Society Pipe (Mr D. G. Dickson), Derry's (Mr A. Heath), and the secretary, Mr R. B. Hean. The annual report and balance-sheet were received, the credit balance being £45 6s lid. The annual report stated that four general meetings and nine committee meetings were held during the year It was gratifying to note that the number of affiliated bands was increasing. Nineteen bands were now affiliated, showing that the work of the association for the welfare of the bands was appreciated. Seven brass bands and six pipe bands took part in the annual provincial contest at Ashburton. The thanks of the association were due to Mr J. Connolly, M.P., for the gift of a shield for competition by B grade bands, to the Ashburton Pipe Band Society for a shield for competition by pipe bands, and to the donors of medals. The Ashburton contest committee, particularly the secretary, Mr E. R. Hopwcod, was to be congratulated on the efficient control of the contest. The balance-sheet showed that the finances were in a sound condition, and the executive felt it could expand its activities for the benefit of bandsmen. A solo contest for all bandsmen would be held on August 5. The secretary, Mr R. B. Hean, deserved special thanks for his work. The work of the bands in the cause of charity continued, and the executive hoped the work was fully recognised by citizens. Congratulations were extended to the Woolston Band in winning the Dominion championship, and to the Christchurch Scottish Society's Pipe anr' in s"o:nd place in th' 1 no b?nd contest. It was reported that the entries for the solo competition on August 5 were 190, and that everything pointed to a very successful competition.
