MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M) SATURDAY. CHARGES OF THEFT. Edward Diggs, metal worker, of Sherborne street, aged 27 years (Mr J. D. Hutchison), was charged with stealing chocolates and cakes valued at 16s 3d, the property of Aulsebrook and Co., Ltd. He was remanded until tomorrow. Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop said that the accused was arrested on Frij day afternoon. I Bail was allowed in self £25 and one surety of £25. John Farley, of England, fireman, aged 26 years, was fined £l, in default 48 hours' imprisonment for stealing a book valued at 2s 6d, the property of the New Zealand Railways. Senior-Sergeant J. Fox said that the accused was seen at the bookstall at the Christchurch railway station handling some books, one of which went into his pocket. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. Reginald George Forman, bootmaker, aged 38 years, was charged with stealing a bicycle, valued at £lO, the property of Robert L. Biggart. He was convicted and admitted to probation for two years. FOUR MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. Maurice James Dunn, of Barbadoes street, labourer, aged 19 years (Mr W. J. Stacey) was charged with the theft of a bicycle valued at £6 10s, the property of Berkley Sloane. He was convicted and sentenced to four months' imprisonment. Senior-Sergeant Fox said that the cycle was left outside Lancaster Park and on Friday two constables saw the accused riding it at Belfast. CHARGE AGAINST CHINESE. * L^,? oon Sh eong, aged 38, gardener, of Middleton road, was charged with being idle and disorderly, having insufficient lawful visible means of support. The hearing was adjourned sine die. Chief-Detective Dunlop said that he was not satisfied as to the mentality! of the accused. He appeared to be a' drug addict. CHILDREN'S COURT. (Before Mr H. A. Young. S.M., and Mrs T. Green, J.P.) For theft one boy was committed to the care of the State and another placed under supervision for two years. There were charges of cycling without lights and cycling on the footpath against 12 lads. Five were fined from 6d to 2s 6d, and the others were admonished and discharged. A youth who had used an air pistol in the gardens was admonished and discharged, and the weapon was confiscated.

KAIAPOI. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) DANGEROUS SPEED. Alex. A. Mackintosh, charged with driving a motor-car on the Main North road at a speed dangerous to the public, was fined 20s and costs. CIVIL CASES. Judgment for the plaintiff by default was given in the case of C. B. Bourne v. D. McDonald for £7 0s 8d and costs. In the case of M. Ropata v. D. Ellison, a claim for £23 12s, judgment was given for the plaintiff for £lO and costs.
