PERSONAL.

(SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.) GREYMOUTH, July 13. Mrs A. Dryberg, who has been visiting friends in Kamaka, has returned to Wellington. Mr J. C. Noonan, depot superintendent for the Shell Oil Company, has been transferred from Hawera to Greymouth. Mr and Mrs C. Stevenson (Auckland) are spending a holiday on the West Coast. Mr Norman T. H. Bynd (London) is visiting the West Coast and is spending a holiday at the South Westland Glaciers. Mr T. H, Lee, who has been visiting Wellington, has returned to Reefton. Mr J. Walsh, who has been visiting Wellington, returned yesterday to Reefton. Miss B. Brown (Ashburton) is visiting the West Coast. Building Scheme. In comparison with other districts Greymouth's response to the building subsidy scheme of the Unemployment Board has been disappointing. Up till yesterday 15 applications had been received at the Labour office, representing work valued at £5500. Medical Service. At a representative meeting of South Westland settlers, it was decided to ask the Westland Hospital Board to increase the allowance for a resident doctor for South Westland to £3OO a year. Mr N. Brown reported that he had had sympathetic interviews with the Minister for Health and the British Medical Association in Wellington. A delegation to the new medical association, consisting of Messrs N. Brown, E. Best, P. Miley, and A. Dewar, was appointed. Aerodrome Site. The Westland County Council at Hokitika has decided to assist the newlyformed aviation company at Hokitika by granting a remission of fees on the present landing ground. Mr Paul Renton, who owns a valuable freehold adjoining the landing ground, has agreed to the property being vested in the county council free of charge on condition that all the revenue _ derived therefrom is devoted to the improvements and maintenance of the landing area. The council has accepted the gift and decided to assist the company.

Unemployment. The Hokitika Unemployment Committee reports that the following numbers of men are employed under the Unemployment Board's various schemes: No. 5, 208; No. 4A, 60; No 48, 62; gold-mining, 94; forming track at Taipo, 6; total, 430. The amount required as a full allocation for this total was £l2lß, of which £875 was paid. Church Army. The Anglican Church Army is conducting a mission in the parishes of Hokitika, Kumara, and Ross, and is also holding services at Kanieri, Rimu, and Kokatahi, where the attendances have been good. Inter-Club Debate. The first inter-club debate for the season for the Kent Honours Board took place last evening, when Trinity seniors challenged and won the board from the holders, the United Club. Trinity team secured 378 points against United's 374. Mr W. Meldrum was judge and the subject was "Should body-line bowling be abolished?" At the conclusion of the debate, Mr F. M. Dennehy, who witnessed the five tests in Australia recently gave his impressions regarding the bowling tactics adopted by Larwood. Basketball. Basketball games were played yesterday under the West Coast Association, as follows: —A Grade: Main Old Girls beat Technical A, 6 to 3; Convent Old Girls beat St. Mary's, 8 to 3; Technical Old Girls beat Technical Jl, 12 to 7. In the B Grade: Thorpy's drew with Technical B, 8 all; St. Mary's beat Main Old Girls, 7 to 2. Obituary. The death occurred at Buller Hospital whilst under an operation, of Mrs Cape, of Millerton. She was 43 years of age and had resided at Millerton for the last 13 years. She was a native of Mountain Ash, Wales.

Rifle Shooting.

The Grey Miniature Rifle Club held its first competition for the Malloy Brothers' trophy last evening, when R. Simmers, D. Patterson, S. Ashton, and W. Hamilton tied for the hotty button with a score of 69 all. In a re-shoot, Simmers won with 69. D. Patterson and N. Hamilton were equal scorers for the Malloy trophy with 69.2, S. Ashton and R. Simmers being runners-up with 69 each. Automobile Association. The Greymouth branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association met last evening, the chairman (Dr. W. McKay) presiding. The chairman reported having received a suggestion from the chairman of the Westland branch that a joint meeting of the two branches periodically would be an advantage as each branch had much in common. It was decided to adopt the suggestion and to send a delegation to the Westland branch's next meeting. The Westland branch reported its intention of making a grant towards the Flowery Creek-Kumara Junction road and the Grey branch decided to I request the Canterbury Association to j make another and to make one itself. Each grant would carry a subsidy and with that made by the Westland County would go far towards improv- ! ing the present road by gravelling.
