PAINTING OF MOUNT COOK.

PRESENTED TO UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS. The gift to the University of Illinois of a painting, "Mount Ceok at Eventide," by Mr Dunean Darroch, of the Hermitage, is reported i n the "Daily Illini," the student newspaper of the university, of June 11. Giving a reproduction of the painting, the paper says it was preEented for the architecture building of the university by Professor William Trejease, professpr emeritus of botany, and Mrs Trelease. "The painting was secured by the Treleases," the report continues, "during their recent stay at the Hermitage, New Zealand, near the foot of the famous mountain. The artist, Mr Parroch, is a native New ZeaJarjder of Scotch Highland stock, a guide whose avocati9n is painting the mountains around him. Hp is almogt self-taught, and has painted somewhat in the Canadian Rockies and hi? native southern alps. First in United States. "His work is frequently exhibited at home and is not unknown in Europe, but 'Mount Cook at Eventide* is believed tp be the first ot hie canvaues to find a home in the United States.
