SKULL OF ABNORMAL THICKNESS.
EXPERT EXAMINE TARANAKI
DISCOVERY. U'KfSS ASSOCUTIQir T»r.EGSA»J STHATFOBD, July 12. A skull of abnormal thickness found at WiMk&wau beach last January by a Stratford party was submitted for expert examination to Pr. Elliot Smith, professor of anatomy 1:1 the University of London, whose reply indicates the possibility of New Zealand having been inhabited by primitive man long before the Maori occupation. Professor Elliot Smith says the fragments sent are part of the skull of a young adult. They are compar* able in thickness with the Piltdown and Peking skulls, is quite phenomenal. The specimen does not conform to the Maori type, but is much more primitive, however, nothing short of a whole skeleton would justify a full opinion. In the event of anything further of interest emerging, Professor Elliot Smith will communicate again.
