There were 450 deaths from typhoid in 1882 out of a population of 815,000. and only 35 last year, out of a population of 2,519,000." Quoting these statistics the Minister for Health in the New South Wales Government (Mr Weaver) recently put forward a "scheme of preventive medicine," which, he claimed, would further reduce the number of patients and cut the cost ol hospital treatment by one-quarter. An illustration of the benefits of preventive treatment, he said, was diphtheria. Hospital treatment of a case cost £2O, but simple treatment to confer life-long immunity cost only ss.
