AUCTIONS. H. MATSON AND CO. "tr MATSON and CO. REPORT ON Al. THE ADDINGTON MARKET AS FOLLOWS:— STORE SHEEP. 1L MATSON' and CO. report the apparent failure o£ 'ho Economic. Conforonco and tho fiisiti" in lamb advised from overseas baa 710 effect whatever on the eagerness to purcli.'isy store sheep and hoggets of all classes. Tho total comprised 3158, and apart from several advertised lines the quality forward was of an uncertain nature. HOGGETS —The total number of hoggets offered represented 1351 i, and a steady demand was in evidence from the outset, continuing to the finish, some buyers being keen particularly on the larger lines of advertised consignments. In our opinion for the latter lots sales were buoyant, as tho followi„„ principal sales will clearly demonstrate: "35 half bred wether hoggets, ex Sprmglield. rather small, 7s; 220 halfbred owe lambs from tho same district, 13s lrt; Jt;.| 1 hrec-quarterbred ewo lioggets, a splendid line, 14s 3d; 80 fino threo-quarterbred ewo lambs, lis 5d ; 80 crossbred ewo lambs, ex Olio Tree il ill, lis 10d ; 81 halfbred wether lambs, ex Parnassus, a good even lot, 10s Od' 80 thrce-quarterbred ewo lambs, ex Springfield, 12s 2d; 70 halfbred mixed sex lambs ex Anama, 8s sd; 70 halfbred wether lambs, ex Am;.™, 5s td ; 5:! BREEDING KWBS —1500 came to hand, tut the majority were tail-ends and oddments. The buying attendance, however, was strong, and considerable interest was taken in all lines showing in lamb to a popular type of ram, and tho market all round showed an upward tendency. Wo were of the opinion that good ewes rose again from Is Cd to 2s per bead, two-tooth ewes 13s to 18s (>d according to class, best frmr-year-old es and sound-mouth from lis 7d to 17s; others 7s 9d to 10.i 8(1, backward and thin ewes 5s lid to Bs. Vendors were expressing no regret* as regards the prices obtained to-day, end it was impossiblo for them to do so. as genuine vendors* consignments "were all told by auction at prices that exceeded thoso of recent occasions. The follow-ing principal sales will give a good indication, but it must be borne In mind that apart from JV few lines in the yard, tho sheep wero dry in the wool and showed the lack of succulent feed that is non-existent in Canterbury today. 211 Corriedale ewes, two, four, six, mid' eight-tooth, ex Olcntui, a good line, ■with Southdown and Corriedale rams in April, 10s 7d to 10s Rd; 72 Romney cross ewes, four anil six-tooths, with Romney rams in April, 13s 7d; 72 Romnev ewes, with Romney rams in April, 14s 2d; 52 Romney fuves, sound-month, Romney and English Leicester rams in March, lis 7d; 5G Romney two-tooth ewes, Southdown rams in April, 13s, small; 10!) SELL THROUGH MATSONS. FAT LAMBS. XT. MATSON anil CO. report .the loss of Competition from the freezing works owing to their recent closing affected the price of light and plain lambs. While they were perhaps indifferent over recent sales in their limitH for this class, in some cases to-day no bids were forthcoming for these sorts, and they had to be sent down to the store pens, where better returns wero available. The best quality lambs wero competed for Iceenly by the butchers, but consignments cf this class were somewhat limited. Practically the whole of the entry comprised medium to light lambs, all lots being sold at auction at the following basis of prices:— Extra prime heavy lambs to 22s lOd, prime heavy 17s fid to 20s, primo medium 13s to 17s, light 9s to 12s fid. MATSON and CO. report:—The fat sheep market was a most extraordinary one to follow, but before commenting on the sale we purpose drawing attention to the fact that there have been entries over the last few weeks on an average of 6000 sheep per week, and last week, anticipating shorter entries to-day, buyers waded in and over purchased, with the result that to-day, •with the exception of for the primer quality, they wero indifferent. Officiating salesmen obtained good jjrices for the prime lots of both ewea and wethers, particularly the latter if they were lucky enough to elicit tho competition of tho leading butchers \tor this class, but there was a noticeable difference in prices throughout the day on consignments from the same vendors. Light and plain Borts, of which there was on oversupply, were in many cases disregarded except at very tempting pricos, and many of this class were available from 7s to 3 os, •whereas a few weeks ago they were realising 12s *o 14s. Prominent factory competition wax not available, and it was solely a butcher's market. If anything towards the finish cf the sale the market firmed a shade. Our opinion is that the market, while it ■was very erratic, showed very little difference for the primer sorts, but all others Buffered to the extent of Is to Is 6d. The total entry was in the vicinity of 4500, and again southern vendors were forward with choice owes and 9 small number of wethers. Vendors wore prepared, however, to take the jiuarket price owing to the shortage of feed, Mnd, in fact, holding at this time of the year, on the heavy land arojnnd Christchurch Js not conducive to the stock keeping their condition, and they would show a distinct logs of bloom when again submitted for auction. Values were as follows:—Extra prime to 26s 4d, prime heavy 19s 6d to ®2s, prime medium 16s to 19s, ordinary 13s 1.) 15s 6d, light 10s to .12s 6d; extra prime *wes up to 19s lOd, prime heavy 14s Cd *0 17s 6d, prime medium lis to 14s, ordinary Cs to 10s 6d, light and inferior 5s to 7s 6d. Tho sale must be termed a very firm ono, with keen competition ruling for all classes. There was B big entry of cow beef, including a lot of second-grade cattle.
