In drizzling rain the Bishop of Winchester, Dr. Cyril Garbett, began a 75-mile walking tour of the New Forest deanery on May 13. He wore a cassock and carried a knapsack and a 6ft. pastoral staff made from old oak of Winchester Cathedral. Accompanied by his chaplain the bishop intended to walk from eight to 15 miles a day, visiting 20 parishes.
