MEMBERS OF FIRE BRIGADES.

RESULTS OF EXAMINATION. Twelve members of the Christchurch Fire Brigade entered for the examination of the New Zealand Fire Brigade Officers' and Members' Institute, held in Christchurch last month, and all were successful —10 in passing both papers, and two in passing the first paper. This is the second examination held by the institute in Christchurcru and at the first five members of the brigade entered, and only one failed to pass, but he was one of the successful entrants for this gear's examination. The first paper is concerned with the general work of a brigade, including water supply, methods of dealing with different kind of fires, statistics of the town, and details of the equipment of a brigade. The entrants also had to take down 15 minutes' dictation from the editorial articles from a newspaper in the centre in which the examination is held; those who sat for examination in Christchurch took down dictation from editorials in "The Press." The second paper dealt with problems in mathematics and hydraulics. For the i first paper the maximum marks awarded were 150; for the second 170. Increasing Efficiency. Superintendent C. C. Warner, in a report on the subject, states that the iollowing members of the brigade successfully passed the examination of the New Zealand Fire Brigade Officers' and Members' Institute, held at the Central Fire Station. Christchurch on Monday, June 26, 1933: Passed both first and second papersJ. M. Thompson, C. Thompson, A. S Couper, J. H. 3ax, N. Murray, T. 1,. Shield, H. Perkins, C. W. Stevenson, O. Walesby, and S. J. Taylor. Passed in first paper only: J. Jones, J. Callaghan. "I am pleased to report,'' Superintendent Warner wrote, "(hat the Christchurch Fire Brigade enjoys the distinction of having the greatest number of entrants and passes for these examinations. No fewer than 17 of the men have passed, which I regard as very good, and which, no doubt, will result in their making themselves more proficient for higher positions in the service. The results of the iitrch examinations of the British Institution of Fire Engineers have not yet come to hand. Eight men sat in Christchurch, out of a total of' 13 candidates for the Dominion. From this it will be seen that every endeavour is being made to bring the staff up to the highest state -of efficiency."
