PERSONAL. | (SPECIAL TO TD PBE88.) GREYMOUTH, July 11. i The Rev. Father Phejan, Westport, left to-day on a visit to Christchurch. Mr O. Randle, secretary of the Builer Sawmillers' Association, is visiting Greymouth. Miss Mavis Burgoyne left to-day on holiday to Christcburch. Constable J. Patterson, who has been relieving at Otira, has returned to Greymouth. Miss Marion Wills, of the Reefton Hospital, who has resigned to take a position in the Nelson Hospital, left Reefton yesterday. Messrs O. Morris, N. Bayley, and Mclnroe left to-day on a holiday visit to Wellington. Obituary. The death occurred last evening at the Grey. Hospital of Mr Martino Negri, aged 72, an old and respected resident of Blaketown. He was a native of Aprice, in the province of Sondrio, Italy. He came to New Zealand more than 40 years ago, and went gold digging on several of the fields on the West Coast. For more than 30 years ho had been a member of the Greymouth watersiders. He leaves a widow and one son. He held the Royal Humane Society's certificate for saving three persons from drowning, and the people of the district presented him with a gold watch to mark his humane effort The presentation of the watch was made to him by Earl Jellicoe. The old boys' association also presented him with a gold medal to mark the occasion. The death occurred at Wellington yesterday of Mr Thomas Dillon, a wellknown West Coast bridge builder and contractor, aged 67. He was a native of Ireland. He was first employed as a bridge builder by Butler Ltd., at Ruatapu. after which, he went into business on his own accounted built many bridges in the Grey, Buller.and Wellington districts. His biggest works were the Hokitika railway bridge, the Teremakau bridge, and the Ahaura bridge. Prospecting. Prospecting by means of boring is being carried out in an auriferous area at Awatuna, near the area recently dredged by the Awatuna Company. Sea Lion. Some excitement was caused at Hokitika yesterday when a sea lion appeared on the beach, where it was viewed by a large number of residents. It was finally scared away by boys and took to the water again. Boss Goldfield. A report has been received of a find of gold-bearing quartz at Ross in the Cedar Creek district. The find is causing considerable interest in Ross. There are 46 prospectors out at work along the Wataroa river in South Westland. Sawmiller Injured. Mr David Birchfleld, of Ruru, was admitted to the Grey Hospital on Sunday, having suffered concussion when a motor-cycle he was riding collided with a cyclist on the Moana road. Fire. Alarm. An alarm was given yesterday afternoon for a fire which proved to be in a hedge at the residence of the Italian Consul, Cavaliere Geraldo Perotti. Although the fire brigade was quickly in attendance, its services were not reI quired.
