DAIRY PRODUCE.

IMPROVEMENT OF QUALITY. SUGGESTIONS DISCUSSED. irRESS ASSOCIATION TBUGUH.) WELLINGTON, July 11. Various suggestions for improving the quality of dairy produce and reducing costs were put forward at a meeting of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union to-day. An Auckland remit asked that the dairying industry should be reorganised compulsorily by the Government in order to avoid economic waste in manufacture, the overlapping of cartage on roads, and to facilitate cooperative marketing. The remit suggested that proprietary companies should be bought out, further proprietary companies prohibited, unnecessary co-operative companies absorbed by other companies, and redundant factories closed. In seconding the remit Mr H. E. Blyde (Taranaki) said that Ireland had recently cut out one-third of its dairy factories in the interests of economy. Mr C. H. Murney (Otago) asked where the country was going to get the finance to buy out the proprietary dairy factories? On his suggestion the remit was referred back for redrafting in an acceptable form. At the instance of Southland it was agreed to endorse a suggestion that immediate steps be taken to bring about the long-due improvement in the quality of New Zealand cheese, -which would bring about increased consumption both locally and overseas. A remit put forward by the combined conference was carried recommending the Dairy Producers' Board to meet councillors in the various cities and towns with a view to reducing their overhead charges for distribution, and thus enable consumers to obtain a larger supply of milk and cream at a lower price. Mr L. C. Bryant (Wellington) said that the overhead charges of the Wellington city milk department were so high that if it were given the milk for nothing it would be unable to sell it at less than 3Jd a quart.

MINING.

NEW COMPANY FLOATED. A company has been formed to work the claim owned by Messrs Oxenbridge and party on the Shotover river. It is understood that the capital of the company will be £12,500, and it is reported in Dunedin that it is already oversubscribed. MOUNT DAVID CLAIM. Messrs W. V. Sturmer and A. Watson, directors of the Mount David Sluicing Company, Ltd., recently returned to Dunedin from a visit to the .company's claim at Blackwater, West Coast, and have reported as follows: The work lately carried out and that now in operation consists of laying of a pipe line to Snobs, clearing the site of the best sluicing operations, and removing plant from Caribou to Snobs. Twelve men are working well in very rough country, and it is expected that sluicing will be commenced this week, and there will probably be a wash up on July 19. So far as the race is concerned, the greater portion is in excellent condition, and inexpensive improvements will shortly be made, which will enable much more water to be brought in. Ultimately some more expensive work must be carried out in one section of eight chains, and a tunnel constructed in another section. This done, the whole race will be sound, and there will then be no danger of any portion being carried atfay. Highly satisfactory prospect* were obtained with the dish at Snobs. An inspection of the Caribou, the scene of previous wash-ups, revealed a number of cracks of various stees, which make it highly probable that the bulk of the gold in this wash was lost before reaching the boxes. BELL HOOPER CROMWJSLL COMPANY. The mine manager reports as follows for the period ending July ?: Mining operations have been confined mostly to development work in No. 1 tunnel. From the entrance of this tunnel to the face the main drive is now in a total distance of 801 feet, of which total 245 feet approximately is in wash. This face ha* yet to go 300 feet before we reach the back boundary, and will be running parallel with the western boundary at a distance of 05 feet away. The face at present is in payable wash. No. 1 cross drive is cut 21 feet and is also in good wash. The airway cross drive was connected up. with the main air course. No. 2 Tunnel—At a distance in of 350 feet a rise was put up and topped the wash 12 feet above the back of the tunnel. Not sufficient work has yet been done to determine its value. AUSTRALIAN PRICE OF GOLD. The price fixed by the Commonwealth Bank for gold, including jewellery, lodged at the Melbourne Mint, for the week ended June 30, is at the rate of approximately £6 17s lid a standard ounce (22 carats), equal to a premium of 77.08 per cent. Payment is made according to the assay value of the gold. The price is 3d higher on the week. The price an ounce fine is £7 10s Sd, a rise of 3d on the week. The Commonwealth Bank's price for sovereigns at head office, Sydney, on June 30 was 355. This is subject to alteration without notice.
