BLUE LUPINS.
VALUE AS GREEN MANURE. An article appeared on the Farm Page last season descriptive of the cultivation of blue lupins at Stoke Rochford, the farm of Mr F. Marshall, at Prebbleton. Mr Marshall has just .ompleled the ploughing in of lupins, for green manure Prior to the operaton one square yard of the lupins was pulled up, and it weighed Cilb. Taking the 4340 yards to the acre, this gives the phenomenal result of over 13 tons of green manure to the acre. Mr Marshall says that lupins are of the greatest use in aerating arid sweetening the soil, which they loosen in stiff land, thus saving a great amount of cultivation. Two paddocks green manured at Stoke Rochford last season yielded 10 bushels of wheat per acre better average than the rest of the wheat paddocks. Moreover, these two pad-
docks have had four crops of wheat in six years. In spite of the fact that the wheat was badly mildewed, the yield averaged 55 bushels to the aero. The unmanured paddocks threshed 4o bushels. The result, taking into consideration the mildew on the manured paddocks, and without the other benefits attaching to the practice, shows conclusively that lupins are a valuable crop.
