RUGBY. SECONDARY SCHOOLS' MATCH. ST. BEDE'S COLLEGE BEATS ST. ANDREW'S. A rather disappointing exhibition of Rugby was provided by the annual match between the first fifteens of St. Bede's College and St. Andrew's College yesterday. St. Bede's College won by 8 points, a converted try and a try, to 0. The match was played at St. Bede's College in fine weather on a ground made somewhat slippery by the recent rain. St. Bede's College held a territorial advantage for most of the first half, but the backs lacked the finish to penetrate the very stubborn defence put up by St Andrew's. The tackling of both teams was remarkably goodmuch better than is usually seen in senior competition matches in Canterbury—but in this respect only was the game outstanding. There was none of the sparkling play and quick passing that is expected from school Rugby. The St. Andrew's backs made very few attempts to throw the ball about. The baM was certainly greasy, but the St Bede's backs managed to handle it with success. L. G. Andersen, St. Andrew's halfback, was inclined to be slow in getting the ball away, but any good efforts he made were nullified by the policy Thi'r«? n / t ?K n0 V sly , kicked int ° touch The rest of the backs were thus starved and had no opportunity of showing their capabilities. The St. Andrew's forwards worked well, and it was due t,™' r strenuous efforts that their rti'i^ l^/ 0 * S* ch a lon £ time in ™Mn, ter part of the sec °nd half. p. Bh ° w } n S tha " they did against Christ s College a fortnight ago, and handled the greasy ball very well. They are inclined to be orthodox in attack, and at the beginning of the game tb* connexion between D. White, at balf, and P. Scully, the first Aveeighth, was erratic, but this was overcome later. In the latter part of the game the inside backs particularly worked together very well. The forwards also showed an improvement and fed the ball to their backs very qnickly. The teams were: St. Bede's—Full-back, C. Slattery; right wing, T. Simpson: centre. A. Hendren: left wing, G. McEvedy; first flveeighth, P. Scully (captain); second

five-eighth. P. Sheehan; half-back, D. White: forwards, D. Daly, W. Heffernan: R. Griffiths, P. George, W. Dando. B. O'Malley, T. Dew, P. Smith. St. Andrew's—Full-back, W. Pv. Boyce; right wing, W. K. Dougall; left wing, S. J. Gray; centre, F. B. Price; second five-eighth, D. L. Jones (captain): first five-eighth. L. T. LeLievre; half-back, L. G. Andersen; forwards, S. B. Bowker. W. L. Barry, G. w. Scott, F. K. Forrester, E. H. Perry, T. A. Stow, P. McMillan, and B. C. H. Clarke. The Play. The first try for St. Bede's cam* Ylpto 4ye minute* of the kick-off. After a St. Andrew's back movement sroA*.5 ro A*. down the st - Bede's forwards dribbled to St. Andrew's twenty-five where a scrum was ordered. St. Bedes hooked. White's pass was too long and Scully missed it. Sheehan, however, snapped up the dropped pass and gave it to Hendren, to McEvedy, who ran over wide out. White con♦arted. St Bede'a 5, St. Andrew's 0.

Some scrambling play near mid-field followed until the St Bede's backs swept into attack from a scrum. Good kick* by Boyce and LeLlevre relieved for St Andrew's. The forwards had a lon* tussle in neutral ground until White ran round a scrum and put St. Bede'a in an attacking position. Short kick* into touch took play downfleld •fain. St Bede's backes obtained and Simpson put in a good run down the line. Soon afterwards a score seemed certain but a forward pass to McBvedy spoilt the movement. Line-kK-ing took St. Andrew's to within striding distance. Dougall's attempt at aoal from a fre* kick did not rise. Prom a ncrum White sent hie backs away and the ball went out to Simpson, who made a good run, but was well stopped bv Boyce. Th* St. Bede's backs attacked again and whin the rush broke down the forward* came round, heeled the ball. n"d pent the backs away again. McEvedy was pushed out in the nick of time. Halttime came with the score:— St. Bede's 5, St. Andrew's 0.

The St. Andrew's backs were rearranged for the second half. Boyce moved up to the right wins. Dougall went in to second five-eighth, and Jones went to full-back, pougall gained a lot of ground for St. Andrew's when he sent a Ign* W e * *Wm the field and followed hard. Thei St. Bede's forwards quickly took may back to St. Andrew's territory, where the backs mad* thrust att* r _, » only to be solidly repulsed. From a scrum in front of the posts St Bede s hooked and White tried a field goal. The ball went vide of the ports but over the line. On July 22 a special train excursion arranged by the Hokitika Poultry Club would leave Christchurch for Hokitika and would return the same night. All the arrangements for the match would be completed by the Westland Sub-Union. I ASSOCIATION. REPORT ON AUSTRALIAN TOUR. "TOO MANY PASSENGERS." WELLINGTON, July 11. "The team had to carry too many passengers in consequence of players failing to produce their form," said Mr H. l: Godber, manager of the New Zealand team which toured Australia in a report presented this evening to the Council of the New Zealand Football Association. The form of at least Ave players was not up to club standard, said Mr Godber, thereby disorganising the team and throwing too much on the shoulders of the remaining member?. The tour took place too early in the season to enable a selection on current form. Two of the strongest teams were met early in the tour, and the heavy defeats affected the morale of the younger members. The matches were played on harder and rougher grounds than the players were accustomed to. Of the 13 matches plnyed three were won, one drawn, and nine lost. Goals for totalled 29, and against. 45. With average "field" luck the !ast three matches would have been won, but that luck was absent. During the tour one match was played by floodlight. Visibility was perfect. Three of the test matches were deservedly won by the Australian side, which was definitely better than the New Zealand one. The standard of refereeing was equal to New Zealand's. It was interesting to note that in Australia the referee was a paid official. The conduct of the team was excellent, and there was no discord of any kind. Accidents befel Ives, who missed five matches, Baker, who. sprained an ankle in the first practice and did not play in a match, Graham, who received a face injury, and Zuill, who suffered an internal injury in the last test and was ordered three months' rest. Mr Godber added that he understood there would be a considerable loss on the tour. There was a unanimous opinion in Australia that there should be more frequent visits between the two countries. Australia indicated that it was willing to share tours of teams from Africa or Italy, Although the team failed in its objective, Mr Godber said he believed that the players would profit by the experience gained. The report will be discussed at the next meeting of the council. The chairman (Mr F. Campbell) welcomed Mr Godber and Neale McArthur, assistant manager, and congratulated them upon the conduct of the tour.

A challenge from tfae Wetftlaad As-

sociation for the Peter Dawson Cup held by Buller, was approved. Further grants towards conducting the primary schools' tournament, and also the secondary schools' tournament, to be held towards the end of August, were made by the council.
