NOTES ON THE RACING. [TJT3 PRESS Special SeiTice.J WELLINGTON, July 11. Thurina's Good Display. Thurina gave an excellent display throughout the Matai Hack Steeplechase, and but for being badly interfered with by Gueress when she fell seven furlongs from home would have won by much more than the margin recorded. As it was he draw away from Fine Acre after crossing the last fence, and still had something in hand at the finish. Quinopal did not last long, crashing at the third fence after making a faulty jump at the previous obstacle.

Favourite Fails. Drum Fire was made a good favourite for the Woburn Handicap, but after being prominent to the false rail, he gradually went back. Arnyril was first on to the course proper, closely attended by Pladie. with Errantry and Drum Fire heading the remainder. The two iirst-named drew away inside Ihe distance, and fought out a close finish, Amyril hanging on to win by a neck. Colossical was a moderate third, in front or Woodful. Milnrow, Drum Fire, and Gold Dress. The winner is a three-year-old filly by Psychology from Amyrin, dam oi Grotesque and Melissa, winners of a few years back. The runner-up. Pladie, is a gelding of the same age by Paladin from Canal, and was breo. by Mr It. M. Greensladc, of Dunedin. A Well-backed Winner. High Grader was sent, out at an uncommonly short price for a jumping race in the Vittoria Hurdles, and the result was never in doubt. He went to the front at. the first fence and his position was never disputed or even challenged. He hit a few of the obstacles fairly hard, but this failing did not impede his progress. Rannma and Paleta, who were the winner's nearest attendants in the last half of the journey, had a prolonged struggle for second money, Eamuna getting in the deciding .stride. Vitaphone was a poor fourth, clear of Jo'o c\c Val. Taura Lad, Sir Music, and Hounslow. Beacon Fire Impresses. Beacon Fire, favourite for the Stewards' Handicap, scored an impressive win. He was close up to Glcnvane, The Tiger, and Royal Hunting, entering upon the course proper, and had forged to Ihe front just after passing the distance post. He was not mrther troubled ana won with a lot in hand from Merry Peel, who came from a rear position to get up to beat Royal Hunting. The Tiger was next and then xollowed Manawhenua, Glenvane, and Miladi, with Normandy last. The Steeplechase. The Vv'ellJnsrton olecepliehaso provided the most spectacular contest in the event for many years, only one horse falling. The'field was well bunched for the greater part of the journey, and with a round to go Omeo and High Pitch disputed the lead, but the former always gained an advantage over the fences. Billy Boy, Luna Lux. and Make Up closed on this panentering upon the last circuit, and after passing the six furlong post High Pitch dropped back, and Luna Lux ran up to Omeo. Luna Lux headed him rounding the far turn, but Omeo was in front again over the fence at the half mile. From that onwards he held his position. Luna Lux was almost on terms with him at the last fence, but again Omeo shot away, and went on to win by six lengths from Luna Lux, who had a bigger advantage from Make Up. Callarnart struggled on into fourth place, clear of Billy Boy, with High Pitch and Copcy tailed off. Valves fell seven furlongs from home when in last place. Atlventiis Wins Decisively. Paddon carried most confidence in the Trentham Hurdle Handicap, but gave a very weak display, and lost ground at nearly every fence. He was with the then pacemaker Adventus five furlongs from home, but lost ground at the jumps, only 1o make it up again on the flat. Adventus was, however, clear of him and Gold Knight at the last obstacle, and went on to secure a decisive win. Paddon made another blundering effort over the obstacle, and Gold Knight soon had him beaten for second money, while Membo finished strongly to get up to cut him out of third honours. Henry of Navarre and Solanio were well back. The winner is trained by his rider, and gave an excellent exhibition of both jumping and galloping. Gold Knight and Membo were both in the rear for the first half of the journey, but did well in the run home, the former especially registering a performance that would suggest a win for him later at the meeting. Membo appeared to be drifting out of the contest half a mile from home, but made a renewed effort over the final stages. Curie's Comfortable Win. Curie and Lady Spy were always in a leading division in the Whyte Handicap, and the former led into the straight. He increased his advantage in the run home, and won easily from All Humbug, who got up to beat Lady Spy* on the post. Water Power was a length away in front, of Little Doubt and Protomint. Zeebrugge. when going well in fourth place at the straight entrance, was pulled up suffering from a ruptured ligament. West Tor Disappoints. The hitherto unbeaten West Tor was the most pronounced favourite of the day in the Tc Aro Handicap, but was never actually dangerous, and finished sixth. Ida Merling was always one of the leaders, and piloted Swift and Sure, Lovecourt. Heather Glow, and West Tor into tire straight. She was not at all troubled in the run home. Swift and Sure and Heather Glow had a good tussle for second money, the former hanging on to get the verdict. High Speed, who was slow away, finished well from the back to get fourth berth in front of Shootist and West Tor. The winner, bred at Prebbleton, is by Robespierre from Red Wink's dam Ada Merling. The start was riot good, one of the worst sufferers being the West Coaster, Gold Arrur/.
