OBITUARY.

MR E. A. MAPPLEBECK. The death occurred recently of Mr Ernest Arthur Mapplebeck, of 35 Stevens street, Linwood. Born at Bradford, England, in 1877, he , came to New Zealand at an early age and was educated first at the Sydenham school and later at the Christchurch Boys' High School. He was afterwards associated with the firm of Sargood, Son, and Ewen, Ltd., for 33 years, and was highly respected by his fellow-employees. He was minute secretary of the Court Thistle of the Forest, No. 6494, of the A.0.F., and a member of this, lodge for 37 years. He was also delegate to the United Friendly Societies' Dispensary. For many years he was a vestryman of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Phillipstown, and he also served a term as a member of the Phillipstown school commitee. Until recently he was an active member of the Opawa Bowling Club. He is survived by his widow, four daughters, "and two -,ons. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon. Thire was a large and representative attendance. The pall-bear-ers were former associates of Mr Mapplebeck in his various activities. [At the church they were vestrymen, Messrs Joughin, Franklin, Bowley, and McAlister, and at the graveside Messrs Archbold and R. Haigh (Opawa Bowling Club), Mawson and McLeod (Sargood, Son. and Ewen), and Cairns and Locke (Court Thistle of the Forest). The Rev. G. L. Harold conducted the service at the church and at the graveside. The death occurred at Wellington on Friday of Mr George Cooke Alward, marine superintendent of New Zealand Fisheries, Ltd, aged 52 years. Mr Alward was well known in Napier, having lived there for some time. His brother, Mr R. S. Alward, is managing director of New Zealand Fisheries. Mr George Alward had considerable experience in marine engineering before coming to New Zealand to join Messrs J. J. Niven and Co.'s staff at Port Ahuriri. When the trawler Nora Niven was constructed at Home, Mr Alward went to England and returned to the Dominion with the vessel. He was later appointed marine superintendent of New Zealand Fisheries, Ltd. MR J. M. CORADINE. (PBES3 ASSOCIATION TXUIGBAX.) MASTERTON, July 9. The death is announced of Mr J. M. Coradine, for many years a notable figure in local government in the Wairarapa, aged 72. He was mayor of Masterton for 14 years in all, including the years 1910 to 1919 inclusive. He also gave long service to the Patriotic Association, and was president and chairman of the Claims Board from 1921 to 1928. H* took an active part in founding thelocal Technical School, and gave many sided and valuable public service. Born in England, Mr Coradine was taken to Scotland as a child. He came to New Zealand in 1881, and had lived in Masterton for the last 40 years. Mrs Coradine, who survives her husband, was awarded the M.B.E. for her war and post-war service.
