MISSING AMERICAN AIRMAN.

SAFE IN NORTH-EAST OF SIBERIA. (Received July 9. 5.5 p.m.) MOSCOW. July 8. Mr James Mattern, the missing American world flyer, is reported safe at Anadir, in the extreme north-west of Siberia. Mr Mattern's engine was wrecked when he was forced to land 100 miles from Anadir, where the Soviet frontier guards helped him. He is now awaiting a new engine. [Mr Mattern left New York on June 3 on a single-handed flight round the world, planning to stop at Irkutsk (Siberia), Nome, and Fairbanks (Alaska), and Edmonton f Alberta). . He was sighted next day off the west coast of Ireland, and landed on Jomfruland Island, south-west of Oslo, having had a very bad trip over the Allantic. He then flew to Moscow, and left there after nine hours' rest for Kharbarovsk, 4340 miles distant, in Siberia. He stopped at Omsk, and after leaving there had a forced landing at Prokopievsk, being overcome by fumes from a leaking petrol-pipe, and damaging 'the aeroplane stabiliser in landing. Mechanics were sent to his assistance, and he intended to fly to Krasnoyarsk to have the machine properly repaired. There was no further news of his movements and a rescue expedition started from New York on June 29 to search for him in Alaska.] RESCUE PARTY TO FLY TO SIBERIA. ! VANCOUVER, July 8, The Mattern rescue aeroplane, with a crew of four, will take off from Prince Rupert at dawn on Saturday for Nome and Anadir to bring back Mr James Mattern.
