A complaint that the gift of about 10,000 pairs of boots and shoes which was made by citizens to the unemployed in the recent postmen's clothes drive was cripping the boot repairing industry in Christchurch was placed before the Business Men's Relief Committee by a deputation from the Canterbury Footwear Repairers' Association. After an amicable discussion the committee agreed to distribute some of the repair work required at the relief depots among the city boot repairers at rates to be arranged between the parties. The deputation, which comprised Messrs J. Hutchison (organising secretary), W. Taylor, P. Tayler, J. P. Molloy, and H. E. Barnsley, told the committee that it would be a lbng time before the repairers at the depots could cope with the 10,000 pairs that, had been collected. Since people had given away so much footwear, they said, there would be less work for repairers in the trade. The position appeared so bad that some men in the trade might have to go on relief work themselves. A special officer has been appointed at the central relief depot in Kilmore street to advise relief workers on questions connected with housing, and particularly with rents. His services will be at the disposal of relief workers. A REPORT DENIED. (I'P.ESa ASSOCIATION TKLEGHAM.) WELLINGTON, July 8. In a statement to the "Evening Post," Messrs S. Vella and D. McLaughlin declared that the report of yesterday's issue in regard to a national strike of unemployed men was unauthorised and certainly neither official nor accurate. The only statements made so far by the National Union of Unemployed have been in writing and signed by responsible officers, and no statement will be made at any time except bearing the signatures of the persons issuing the report. This statement is in reference to yesterday's declaration that a national strike of unemployed would not take place.
