RANGIORA CLUB'S RACE. MANY RIDERS EXCLUDED. Seventy-one entries were received for tho cycling road race arranged by the Rangiora Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club for Saturday afternoon. The entrant* included riders from »ho Papanui, Kangiora, Technical, and Halavsell Clubs. The previous race held by tho Rangiora Club was round a block at Kangiora, and an no place had been mentioned for the race on Saturday. it was. taken for granted by tho riders tha.t it would be held over the" same course. In a report of a meeting of the Kangiora Club, published in "The Press" on Saturday, it was stated that the race would start from the .service station at Chaney'a corner and finish at Kangiora. Several riders went in early to Kangiora, while about 50 assembled at Chances. When Mr C. Sanderson, secretary of tho Canterbury Amateur Cycling Centre, under whose jurisdiction the race was to be held, arrived, lie said that only those who were registered with the centre could participate in the race. This decision meant the exclusion of at least ha If of tho Papamn riders, all but two of the Kangiora riders, and one or two riders from the other clubs who had previously competed in races under the centre's jurisdiction. A decision was made by the I'apanui and Kangiora riders to hold a race by themselves, and the riders divided into two groups. After rearranging the handicaps, the I'apanui end Kangiora men were first on their marks, 2!) fating the starter. Th»y rode over the course originally laid down. Soon after twelve riders started in the second race, and rodo over the same course to Kangiora, but circled a different block on arrival, a distance of 25 miles. The results were: 11. A mile further on, Grose dropped ,iar, < n^or doing a fast lap, and overtaking tho 2mm riders. K. Kowe ("'.mini came down about two miles from Kangiora, and J. Kennedy (2min) punctured. At Kangiora K. Walls, Iv. Ksraitiana, and .1. Kdlin were m the lead by about 200 yards from the -iiuin bunch. Turning the, corner to circle the block, Berry, Ulakeway, and t'ren were still holding time bv lOscc on the scratch men, but Berry and L'ren missed the corner arid lost 15scc in having to turn around. At the start of the second time round tho bloc.;, J. R. Northoott (Irnin) was at tho bead of tho first hunch, and thinking it was the finish put hie head down snd sprinted, and before he realised his mistake the others were round the comer. Pearl, an official of the I'apanui Cycling Club, told a reporter on Satur.liy that the reason why so many riders are not registered with the Canterbury Cycling Centre was because of the doubt whether the certihcatea were in order. Last year the >.'cw Zealand Cycling Federation advised that it would ipsuc licenses for all riders in the Dominion, and at the beginning of the year forwarded a supply to the New Zealand Cycling Council to bo distributed among the centres. This the council refused to do, but issued certificates bearing the name New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. This was also hard to understand, for the full title of the association waj the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and Cveling Association. The certificates could not be old stock, on account of tho fact that they bore the date 1932-33 season. Tbe number of riders registered with other centres in New Zealand was very small. In Duncdin the only riders registered were those who competed in the championships at Christchurch in March. ROAD RACE AT MAIREHAU. A 20-mi'ie cash sweepstake road rare was held at Mairehau en Saturday afternoon. The scratch men, I". 11. l'opc and 11. J.
