HOME ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Amongst the matters dealt with at the meeting of the committee of the Home Economics Association yesterday afternoon was the question of the association giving its support to the movement for the work of building at Dunedin an obstetric hospital as soon as possible, and it was decided to comply with the request. The assistance of members also was asked on Friday with the street appeal to be made on behalf of the .Young Men's Christian Association, and it was decided to ask all who could do so to assist. The meeting was attended by Miss L Gilmour (voted to the chair, in the absence of Miss M. A. Blackmore), Misses E. Bevin (honorary secretary), M A. Spence, C. Wardle, M. C. Watson, M. H. Sidey, E. McGregor, S. McKee, and J. Shaw, Mesdames W. H. Barrell, P. B. Stevens, C. L. Rollo, G. Ferguson, C. Garton, J. S. Kelly, and J. Lorimer. Obstetrical Hospital. Dr. W. Irving wrote with regard to the establishment of a Chair of Obstetrics at the University of Otago, and recalled that the women of the Dominion, in less than four months in 1930, were instrumental in raising £30,000 —£5000 in excess of the amount that was aimed at. The Government had promised to build an up-to-date obstetrical hospital to replace two makeshift buildings, but, so far, had not done so. A deputation had brought the matter recently before the Minister for Health, and had received a sympathetic hearing. The association was asked to support in any way the request urging the Government to put in hand the building oT the hospital as soon as possible. Emphasis was laid on the facts that the present was an opportune time to have the building wected, as it would provide employment, and that it could be erected at less cost than two Br three years ago. Mrs Lorimer, who represents the association on the National Council of Women, was asked to vote in favour of urging the Government to go on with the work.

Other Matters. Nurse Maude wrote that she was more than grateful for the parcels of clothing forwarded by the association. All the articles were useful and many of them were new. The. secretary of the Annat branch of the Women's Institute wrote thanking the association for its offer to arrange demonstrations of cookery and home nursing. The chairwoman thanked those members of the association who attended at the depot of the Women's Auxiliary of the Business Men's Relief Committee and helped with the work.

Norris (in the chair), Mesdames A. E. Cooper, K. A. Quartley, A. V. Winchester, H. A. Young, and F. W. J. May, and Miss M. O. Stoddart and Mr R. A. Young (honorary secretary) . Subscriptions from the following were acknowledged with thanks: Mesdames S. M. Inch (Oxford), C. Farr, E. D. Mosley, H. D. Turner. C. Beadel, W. M. Tyers, E. Hartley, T. F. Duncan, J. Cracroft Wilson, A. C. Cottrell, H. D. Andrews, and Miss Hassal. In addition the Cashmere Girls' Club had sent in a generous donation and Mrs Schneideman forwarded a contribution as a result of an afternoon party held by her in aid of the society's funds. Mrs A. E. Cooper, a member of the committee, had held a musical entertainment, and as a result forwarded more than £6 to the treasurer. A letter of thanks was received from Matron L. M. Trumble, of the Cashmere Sanatorium, for goods supplied during the month. Her returns showed that approximately 50 patients benefited during June as a result of the society's activities. A report from the lady visitors to the sanatorium was received, and further money was voted to them to assist the many patients in need. The committee acknowledged with thanks the gift of five pairs of shoes from Mr H. F. Herbert, of the Herbert Shoe Store, and the secretary was instructed to write to him thanking him for his generous donation. Mr R. A. Young announced that he would be pleased to receive donations of money or clothing to assist patients at the sanatorium and their dependents. He would, in addition, be pleased to receive any old head-phones for the use of the patients at the sanatorium, many of whom derive their only amusement from listening-in.
