THE TASMAN CHALET.

TO TIIE F.DTTOR OT TUB HIESS. Sir, —"Mountaineer," who writes in your issue of June 27, may rest assured that the name of John Ball, F.R.S., first president of the English Alpine Club, will always be honoured in the name of the Ball Glacier. Your correspondent is also asking for the return to the old custom of naming the highest mountain in New Zealand. "Aorangi." When one refers to the New Zealand Alpine Journal, dated 1892, and finds the mountain referred to as Mount Cook, it is difficult to understand why "Mountaineer" considers the usage of the word "Aorangi" an old custom. In the first thought "Mountaineer" is concerned because the Ball Hut should be changed to Tasman Chalet, and in the second is asking for Mount Cook to be called "Aorangi." It must be remembered that the mountain was named "Mount Cook" by Lord Stokes in 1847; therefore it is entirely inconsistent for your correspondent to object to the renaming of the Ball Hut (which now possesses conveniences superior to that of a hut), while on the other hand suggesting the alteration of the present, name of Mount Cook to that of "Aorangi."—Yours, etc.,

ALPINIST. July 3, 1033. TO I'lIE EDITOR OF THE t RRSS. Sir, —I am pleased to note that at least one mountaineer is not going to allow the change of name—Ball Hut to Tasman Chalet—pass unnoticed. Could I respectfully enquire upon what authority this "messing about" with old established and historical names is made? To a blind man this change of name is nothing but cheap "catch" advertising, and to anyone who loves the mountains and understands the historic romance of the old pioneer names, such a step that has been taken in the Tasman fills one with regret. To numbers the Ball Hut will .ilv/ays remain the Ball Hut, and I for one hope that the younger generation of mountaineers is not going to be hoodwinked by such a change.—Yours, etc..

BALL HUT. July 2, 1933.
