.» PAPANUI AMATEUR CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. Thero was a large attendance at tho fifth annual meeting of tho Papanui Amateur Cycling- Club, held last evening. Mr K. Rickerby presided. Report and Balance-sheet. The annual report (stated that from a financial point of view the year had been a strenuous one. Many obstacles had been put in tho way of the committee in wising funds, and opposition from certain quarters had resulted in the "round tho gorges" race showing a deficit. During the year tho fight for control of the sport by the cyclists had been continued. Tho club was denied representation at th"e March conference, although at a conference held in November between tho club and the Canterbury Cycling Centre, it was agreed unanimously that representation be a subject for discussion and agreement between the cliib and tho centre. With careful handling there seemed to bo a greater hope than ever of tho cyclists gaining' control in the very near future. Regret was expressed at tho Berious accident that befel R. B. Blakeway while riding in tho Canterbury championships. The committer met on 32 occasions during the year. The roll Showed Jl2 members, a decroase of 10 on last year. During the year 40 new members wcro elected. The club had successfully conducted 18 races during tho season, including the "round the gorges" 100 miles New Zealand championship. Successful club members in championships wore:—F. J. Groso (New Zealand 100 miles, club 40 miles), A. M. Baxter (Canterbury 30 miles), C. R. Buckley (Canterbury 30 miles under 18 years), T. A. Große (one mile and three miles Canterbury track championships, also Otago quarter-mile). Thanks were expressed to tho ladies who assisted during the year, also to the St. John Ambulance Bri. cade and their officer, Mr W. Bailey, for attention given at all tho club's races. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts for tho year had been £lO2 I'Js 6d., There was a small credit balanco. Election, of Officers. Tho election of officers resulted:-—Patron, Mr R. W. Hawko.M.P.; president. Mr L. B. Ilart; vice-presidents, Messrs H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., R. Rickerby, R. L. Kennett, and S. Ilobinson; club captain, Mr A. C. Hands; deputy-club captain, Mr F. E. Pearl; hon. auditor, Mr J. R. Johnston; hon. treasurer, Mr F. E. Pearl; hon. secretary, Mr H. Hill; committee, Messrs T. A. Grose, A. J. Lancaster, O. Hill, W. Marks, J. C. Murray, und J. Douglas; handicappers, Messrs R. Hill and J. Sturrock. After the annual meeting a meeting of .cycling representatives was held, iucluding 12 representatives from Rangiora. A report on the club's activities in tho matter of cycling control was given by Mr J. Sturrock. Question of Control. After a discussion the following resolution was carried unanimously:—"That in view of the situation that has arisen in the control of amateur cycling, by which a7iiateur riders liavo bc«n excluded from recognition under the New Zealand Cycling Federation, this meeting is of tho opinion that the time has arrived when steps should be taken to form a New Zealand League of Wheelmen, so as to put control on a propor footing, and to bring it under the jurisdiction of tho New Zealand Cycling Federation, (hereby associating with tha sport throughj out the world." I Tho motion was moved by Mr G. Wheeler, of the Rangiora Club, and carried unanimously. j It was decided to call a meeting of .ill interested in amateur cycling to further the proposal. Mr J. Sturrock said that tho proposal was supported by the Halswell and Kaiapoi Clubs. Two new clubs, one at Maireliau and tho - other at Waimairi, had promised to affiliato. Otago had promised wholehearted support. Mr T. Grose said the present control was unsatisfactory. Until the Bport was controlled by the cyclists themselvos no progress could be made. Mr L. Buckley said that it was time a definite stand was taken. "We have been promised control for many years," he said, "but have not yet got it."
