RUGBY. AUSTRALIAN TOURING TEAM. CAPTAIN HAS OPERATION. (UNITED TRESS ASSOCIATION —BY ELECTRIC COI'YBIGIIT —TKLEORAPH.) CAPE TOWN, July 2. A. W. Ross, captain of the Australian Rugby football team now touring South Africa, has been successfully operated upon for appendicitis. REFEREES' ASSOCIATION. r ■ LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. A meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Football Referees' Association was held last evening, Mr S. Hollander presiding over an attendance of 45 members. A vote of sympathy to Mr H. T. Fuller in his bereavement was carried. The chairman welcomed Mr A. E. White, president of the Merivale Football Club. An invitation to a social evening at the Merivale club-rooms on Monday next was accepted with thanks. One new member was proposed and one resignation received. Following on a favourable report from the examination committee, Mr H. G. Smith was elected as an active member of the association. Advice was received that the Rugby Union wished referees to be more stringent in their penalties for late tackling. The president stated that referees were asked to delay the putting of the ball into the scrummage until the scrum itself was parallel to the tounch-lines. Mr S. Hollander briefly congratulated Messrs R. W. Blazey and H. O. Jefcoate on their appointment as A grade referees. Mr C. McLachlan said that, in the lower grades, there appeared to be a good deal of confusion regarding the way in which a free kick or penalty kick should be taken. There appeared to be an impression that the ball must be kicked over the mark. This was not correct, the ruling being that the ball must be kicked when the kicker was opposite to the mark. At the finish of the formal business Mr A. E. White said that very many players—even those in the senior grade—were very ignorant of the rules. The referee was put at a disadvantage through this fact. It should not be necessary for him to have to educate the players. His only task should be to see that neither side obtained an unfair advantage. If players were more conversant with the rules he would find less difficulty than he did at present. SUB-UNIONS' MATCH. CANTERBURY CENTRE. MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The management committee of the Canterbury Rugby League met last evening, Mr W. Cole presiding. Also present were Messrs J. T. King, F. Rowe, J. B. Chick, R. M. McGloin, L. R. Cox, E. F. McGuire, S. W. Rogers, T. J. Carey, P. Kirton, and C. L. Hill. The Sydenham Club asked for permission to use Sydenham Park for a match, old timers v. present players. The request was referred to the match committee. The town clerk 'Mr J. S. Neville) advised that a letter from the League about the state of Sydenham Park had been referred to the superintendent of reserves, and that the custodian of the park was now returfing all worn patches. The Junior Advisory Board reported that 16 registrations had been approved, and that the New Brighton Club had entered a seventh grade team. A letter had been written to the West Coast executive asking if a match could be arranged against a Canterbury junior representative team at Greymouth on July 22. On the motion of Mr King it was decided to inform clubs that a bye did not count as a playing Saturday in any term of suspension. The Otago League notified that it was in favour of one selector being nominated from each South Island centre, the New Zealand Council to have the right to appoint a selector or selectors from the list of those nominated. A protest against winning points being awarded to Addington in the junior match against Sydenham on June 24, was entered by the Sydenham Club on the ground that the deciding try was scored from a knock-on. The matter came before the junior advisory board last week, and the referee's decision was upheld. Mr King moved that the game be replayed, but the motion lapsed for want of a seconder. An offer to pay £25 towards the expenses of a Canterbury team to visit Dunedin was received from the Otago League, and it was decided to send a team away on a date to be selected by Otago.
