ATLANTIC AIRSHIP SERVICE.
DR. ECKENER'S PLANS. NOT INFLUENCED BY AKRON DISASTER. BERLIN, April 9. Dr. Hugo Eckener (commander of the Graf Zeppelin) states that the Akron disaster will not affect his Zeppelin plans, and the South American service will open on May 1. The German airship service across the South Atlantic is to be a fortnightly one. It will be run in conjunction with a fortnightly flying-boat service, so that there will be a German mail from Europe to South America every week. The steamer Westfalen, which is to be stationed in midocean, will be a refuelling station for the two-engined Dornier flying-boats, but the airship will make non-stop flights. The airships will carry passengers, while the flying-boats will carry only mails. The trans-Atlantic service will connect the German air services in Europe with the lines operated in South America by a German syndicate. The French Aeropostale line, which takes mail across the South Atlantic in conjunction with fast steamers, is to be speeded up to compete with the German line, and its aeroplanes will probably fly the whole way across the ocean before the end of this year.
