NEW MOTORISTS' BODY.

THE PURPOSE OF ITS FORMATION. LETTER TO AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. The Council of the Canterbury Automobile Association at its meeting last night received a letter from the secretary of the newly-formed Canterbury body, New Zealand Automobile Association (Incorporated), setting forth the reasons for its formation and stressing the fact that the move was a purely defensive one made to protect the interests of South Island motorists for the future. It was made clear that there was no intention of starting a North v. South controversy, but that in the absence of information coming through either the North or South Island Motor Unions, the motorists of Canterbury had thought that they would do better to take some definite action—to be sure rather than sorry. "The motorists of Christchurch," stated the letter, "viewed with alarm the action of the Auckland Association in changing its name to 'Automobile Association, Incorporated,' and having such new name registered with the Registrar of Incorporated Societies in Auckland. "According to the newspaper reports, the alteration was made as the association's activities extended beyond the Auckland province. The obvious intention is no doubt to spread its activities throughout the Dominion. "In order to safeguard the position, at any rate as far as the South Island was concerned, it was deemed extremely advisable to form and register immediately a body with the name 'New Zealand Automobile Association, Incorporated,' and has been done. "Having secured the above name, the new association is prepared to co-operate with the North Island Motor Union and the South Island Motor Union and the associations and clubs associated with the latter until such time as we can all meet, together and formulate some general scheme of activity to combat any 'drive' by the Auckland Association which may be subversive of the best interests of the North Island Motor Union and the South Island Motor Union, and the motorists generally of New Zealand outside the Auckland province." The letter was signed by Mr F. | W. Freeman, as secretary of the new body. i The meeting discussed the letter in committee, and after all aspect:; of the situation had been thoroughly considered, Mr F. D. Sargent moved to the effect that the association should approve of the steps taken by motorists to safeguard their in-1 terests. This motion was carried. |
