BOROUGH COUNCILS

♦ i NEW BRIGHTON. The fortnightly meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) being in the chair, there being also present Councillors J. S. Ainsworth, W. S. Bussell, W. Hulme, T. S. -Thomson, S. J. B. Bargrove, W. Wilkins. A. E. Lawry, and R. E. Holloway. The Christchurch Tramway Board wrote advising that owing to the smallness of the traffic along the Esplanade and the consequent heavy loss to the board, and in view of / the actions of the council respecting the thoroughfare, 'he board Tiad lodged an application with the Licensing Authority for permission to terminate its service at the Ozone Corner, North Beach. The council decided to. inform the board that the policy was to seal the roads in the borough, and that it would be a recommendation to the incoming council that the Esplanade be tarsealed. A resolution was passed that the council strongly protest in all the necessary quarters against the proposal of the board to discontinue its service between Bowhill road and the pier. The Mayor reported that the sum of £ll Os 3d had been received from the New Brighton Municipal Band for the relief of distress. Councillor Lawry was appointed to attend the election to fill the vacancy on the Technical College Board of Governors. Permission was granted to Mr Gladstone Hill to run a programme in tRe Premier Theatre on Good Friday, if approved by the Mayor and town clerk. It was stated that at its next meeting the council would deal with a suggestion from the Canterbury Progress League, that State lending departments be placed on the same footing as private mortgagees. It was decided that the Stock Exchange be thanked for its offer to set up a special committee to advise local bodies on questions arising out of the Local Authorities' Interest Reduction and Loans Conversion Act, 1933. Cr. Bussell reported that the subcommittee appointed to enquire into a renewal of the agreement with the Christchurch City Council respecting heavy traffic license fees had decided not to offer any. objection to a renewal. Councillor J*. S. Ainsworth reported that a number of councillors and the town clerk met representatives of the Waimairi County Council at the junction of River road and Racecourse road, and it was decided that work up to a maximum of £SO be carried out by tar-sealing in the locality, the cost to be borne equally by the respective councils. • 1 9 r - J L , awr * v was appointed the council s delegate to the Metropolitan Relief Association. A meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson) and Councillors A. Holden, H. L. Wiggins, J. E. Tait, C. Hart, J. S. Barr, G. F. Allen, D. F. Oldridge, and H. W. Harris. The borough engineer (Mr G. E. Harper) submitted a report on the work done for the period ending April 5. The Redcliffs seawall was finished, except for the two sets of steps at the end of Beach street, which would be erected when the tides were suitable. Scoria was being carted from the main road for filling in behind the wall.

The metalling of the recently-formed Esplanade roadway was now in hand, 90 yards having been carted to date. The widening of the Scarborough read near the beach tea-rooms was being continued, and the hard rock would be carted and stacked behind the,seawall for the proposed ramp. The widening of the Taylor's Mistake road near the lust turn was progresiins: satisfactorily, and from the Wakefield avenue widening soft spoil was being carted tc cover the sand on the Esplanade. The Mayor said that he could not allow the opportunity to pass of thanking the town clerk and his staff lor their work on the yearly balance. He said that by 6 p.m. on March 31 the trial balance had been prepared. At 12 midnight he was handed the checked balances by the town clerk. This, he claimed, was a record which could not possibly be beaten. A motion oX thanks was carried by acclamation. A letter from the Progress League referring to Crown mortgages was received. Councillor A. Huldcn was nominated to represent local bodies on the Christchurch Technical College Board of Governors. Cr. J. E. Tait was appointed as delegate to vote on behalf of the council.
