Miss Jane Preston, the 60-year-old postwoman at Cockerham village, believes she is the oldest postwoman both in years and service in the North of England. She has been delivering letters daily along the Lune estuary for over 34 years. Her round involves a 12-mile tramp or more every morning, and she estimates that during her service she has walked over 127,000 miles. She prefers clogs to boots. "In the old days," she said, "I also used to trundle the afternoon mails on a handcart to Bay Horse Station, a few miles from the village, but now there is motor transport. That helps, and to-day I feel able to carry on for a good many more years."
