Five persons, including officials, were killed in a fire 4000 feet below the surface in Langlaagte Estate Mine. The victims were gassed. The fire has not yet been located. Rescuers from all the Rand Mines are volunteering. No shift was on duty when the fire broke out. The underground manager, accompanied by officials, only three of whom were equipped with masks, descended to investigate, while the manager led a second party. When they were gassed, rescuers worked desperately. A native bravely rescued two Europeans who had collapsed. The underground manager and four others are dead, while the manager and the rest of his party are in hospital, and their condition is improving.
