OBITUARY.

MR A. H. HOLMES. A well-known former Registrar and ! Sheriff of the Supreme Court at.Christcliurcli, Mr Arthur Harry Holmes, died j yesterd'iy morning at his' home, ,911 Opawa road. Mr Holmes was .at tho j Supreme Court from 1914 until 1924, ' during which time he was a reqpectpd I and popular officer. In his youth he | was a volunteer in the Taranalci Guards. ] ■ Mr Holmes was born in Wellington on January 10, 1803, and was first educated at Te Aro School, where his father was headmaster.. He later attended the Wellington Grammar School., He was first employed by a firm of architects in Wellington, but in 1882 joined the Justice Department in Wei-, lington, where he was appointed a clerk in tho Magistrate's Court. He was 1 transferred to New Plymouth in 1883, : and after spending nine years there was ■ appointed second clerk in tho Wellington Magistrate's Court. A brother-in- | law; of Mr Holmes's, Mr W, P. Jaines, was at that time senior clork in- T^el:. ' lington. Mr James was later appointed : . Stipendiary Magistrate at Master ton. 1 lln 1897 Mr Holmes was promoted to, I the position of Clcrlt of the Magis- ' trato's Court at New Plymouth, where, I he remained until 1903, when he was, again transferred to Wellington. ;In j February, 1914, he- was appointed,i | Registrar and Sheriff of the Supreme • Court at ehristchui ch. He-remained in , position until March 31, 1924, in j ithe meanwhile refusing further promo-' tion and choosing to remain in church. When he finally retired it was' i after 42 years of service.
