HEATHCOTE BRIDGE.
TO THE CDITOt OF THI FUSS. Sir,—The Heathcote "river" at the foot of Hackthorno road is a very small stream indeed, little more than a glorified ditch. Tho width of this "river" is about 12 feet, and a bridge of that span covers tho stream at Colombo street. The City Council has thrown a slab of concrete* over the stream at "Smarts" and this seems to be quito sufficient, but at tho junction of Hack-
thornc road and Ashgrovo terrace a -very ambitious bridgo has been erected to span the same little ditch. I notice that the Mayor and Councillors (accompanied I hope by the Town Clerk) intend to hold a little function to "open" this splendid bridge, which has been open for several months." I should like to suggest that the local dignitaries approach the bridge by way of Fairview street in top gear at a speed of not less than 10 miles an hour and venture to say that not one car will keep on the right side of the road while entering on and crossing the bridge. Ashgrove terrace is very narrow and the absurd bridge which covers not only the stream but a lot of land encroaches so far that, built as it is without any splay, the thing is simply ridiculous.—Yours, etc., POOR RATEPAYER.
