♦ SCHOOLS REOPEN. The Wharenui and Riecarton Schools both started their first twin of the new year on Wednesday morning. Last year the roll at Whavenui totalled 424. Up to Thursday afternoon 55 new pupils had been enrolled. At the end of last year 37 pupils passed out of the sixth standard and 15 pupils have been transferred to other schools. Mr R. E. R: Penny has been appointed to fill. the vacancy caused by the transfer of Mr C.'.Harrow, probationary assistant. The roll at Riecarton last year was 251. This year it has decreased by 32, including 26 sixth standard pupils. There were 18. new enrolments. The vacancy in,, the position of infant tress caused by the l-etiremeivfc. of Miss' M. Wills last year has been filled by the appointment of Miss K. Greenaway. Social Evenings. At the home of Mr and Mrs R. H. Twose, Elizabeth street, the comingof age of their daughter, Phyllis, was celebrated. The rooms were decorated for the occasion,' and the large number of guests enjoyed dancing and competitions. The fortnightly social, and dance arranged by. the 1.0.0. F., M.U. Lodge was held on Tuesday evening in the lodge hall. Mr H. Ashby was pianist, and Mr H. Exton acted as M.C. The prize-winnei'S' were Mesdanies W. Kerr and L. Manson. Swimming. During the week the members of the Wharenui Amateur Swimming Club held a series of races, the finals of which were decided on Thursday. The results were: 220 yards Men's Handicap—Ejirst heat: J.
