ARCHERY LAWN.

♦ POSSIBLE DAMAGE THROUGH BAND CONCERTS. When a report from the PnrUs and Gardens Committee of the Christchurdi Domains Board, recommending tint bands be not allowed to play on the archery lawn in the Botanic Gardens, came before the meeting of that body yesterday, Mr R. B. Owen raised an objection, stating that on the occasion of the performance by the band of tar Young Australia League the ground used for the purpose, between t.h-. Botanic Gardens and Riccarton road proved unsatisfactory. The chairman of the committee, Mr P. George, stated that the objection to using the archery lawn was that Uia flower bed 3 would be damaged. Mr Owen said that the archery la., a was the only part of the gardens fit -Tor marching. " He claimed that 7-j uier» rnarching on the ground would not J" as much damage as a large number of visitors. If the bands were unable to obtain permission to use the lawn, he was afraid that they would have to go to Lancaster Park or Cranmer square. He felt sure that as the Board was noc antagonistic to the bands, the committee's recommendation should be reconsidered. The chairman. Mr H. Kitson, said that the Board did not fear that damage might be done to the lawn by marching. What it did fear was that the flower beds might be damaged. The curator, Mr J. A. McPherson, who could not be accused of any feeling against tho bands, had expressed the opinion that, the beds were likely to be trampled fo pieces if the bands were allowed to perform there. • ■ Mr Owen guaranteed to make gooU any damage done to the beds if permission were granted. Mr W. H. Winsor suggested that tho Board should not bind itself to refuse permission to march until the other "■round was ready for such a purpose. He urged it not to be premature. Mr George said that the ground near Riccarton road would be fit in three ->r four weeks. It was decided that it was desirabls that no bands should be permitted t... play on the archery lawn.
