CHEVIOT. The January meeting of the Cheviot County Council was attended by Crs. Hutt (chairman), Douglas, Foster, Stevenson, and -icLsren. Fitzgerald tor Gore Bay road These tenders had been accepted. The monthly meeting of the Wairewa County Council was held at the Council Chambers, Little Eiver. Present, Messrs J. 0. Coop, (chairman), T. Thompson, T. Feather, W. F. Parkinson, F. Coop, J. ■ X. Chapman, and W. J. Allen. The finance report showed that tho debit balance was £I9OO less than last year. Mr Thompsoa reported that he had discussed the matter of the road at the Canterbury College reserve with members of the Board of Governors. A slip had encroached slightly on the college reserve. A change of the road line would mean twenty chains of fencing. It would be better to buy the.land. The matter was referred back to the committee. Mr White asked, if the Council would allow him to divert the road and put a cattle stop on his own property. It was decided to give Mr White permission to divert the road subject to the engineer's approval, but-the Council would take no responsibility in regard to the gate. The chairman, Messrs Allen and Parkinson, dissented. The Department of Labour wrote in referonce to the fixing of the statutory half-holi-day for the Council district. It was left to the clerk to interview shopkeepers in regard to the matter. The South Island Tourist League wrote in reference to encouraging overseas tourists to tho South Island and the formation of a League. It was decided to take no action. The pay shoot amounting to £283 17s 2d was passed for payment.
