ST. ANDREW'S COLLEGE.

PRIZE DISTRIBUTION. PROGRESS OP THE SCHOOL. The prize-giving eeremony of St. Andrew's College was held in the school grounds yesterday afternoon, the Eev. J. Lawson Eobinson presiding and Mm Lawson Eobinson presenting the prizes. Also present were members of the Board of Governors. The headmaster, staff, and boys were congratulated by the Eev. J. Lawson Eobinson on the successful way in which the past year had been completed in spite of the times. The founders of the College were more and more plainly justified year by year as the College progressed. There had been evidence during the past year that the school was doing just what it had been planned u would do.

To the boys leaving school the speaker 1 said they must retain the principles of traditions of the College when they went out into the world. The prestige of, St. Andrew's College was in their hands, and they must guard it carefully. "I want to make a suggestion which has already met with the hearty cooperation of the Board of Governors," continued Mr Robinson. "It is that a Parents' Association should be formed. It is felt that the parents could greatly assist the work of the school, and early next year a meeting of parents will be called and proposals, which have already been considered by the Board of Governors, will be placed before it. "We are looking forward to the future with great hope," the speaker concluded. "We do not believe the present difficulties will continue much longer, and we are determined that the school shall continue to do for this community what it has already done in the past."

Faith in the School. In his report of the" year's work the headmaster (Mr A. K. Anderson) reminded his audience that a year ago that day Dr. Erwin, in hip last public utterance, had affirmed his faith in the future of Church colleges and of St. ' Andrew's in particular. A Leaving Certificate. "I wish to express my hop© that 1933 will see the institution by the Education Department of the school leaving certificate,." said Mr Anderson. "Progress is being made too slowly in this direction. The need for revision of the education of the average boy is urgent, and the proposed leaving certificate will be a step towards this revision. It will entail an examination with a wider range of subjects than the present university entrance examination. This greater elasticity m the choice of subjects will obviate the candidature of many boys who are quite unfit for university studies, but who desire to be able 10 show some standard of educational equipment, and at present have only the matriculation examination' to sit for. The School RolL "The school roll seems to be stabilising. Existing economic conditions ofiected our roll adversely, as they did the attendance of the bulh of non-State schools. While the total of day boys has been exceedingly well maintained, the boardei-3, drawn mainly from the country districts of Canterbury, have decreased. The roll this year has been 216, including 49 boarders. boys fewer left at the end of 1931 than at the end of the previous year, and seven more boys have been enrolled this year than in 1931. The enrolments for 1933 are more promising than at this tjme last year. The Old Boys' Association is rallying in enthusiastic fashion to the support of the colleger With its financial membership of 500, and under a capable and hard-working executive, the old boys are to bo found in coun tryas well as City, striving for tho Blue and White. They have substantially subscribed to a college endowment insurance scheme, and have devised many means of strengthening the hands of tho Board of Governors." Mr Anderson concluded by thanking the Board of Governors and the parents for their support and co-opera-tion during the year. - Mr William Machin, _v_ieo-presidcnt of the Chamber of Commerce, gave 's_ short address to the boys on thoroughness, and courage in life.
