| GARDEN PARTY. A garden party arid sale of work will be held in the grounds of Holy Trinity vicarage to-morrow afternoon in aid of tho Melanesian Mission. Competitions and a tennis tournament will be held, and there will bo several stalls. Sailing. The Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club will hold an open sailing race tomorrow afternoon. Two Cornwell Cup trials will also be held. ■ On Sunday the club will hold a cruising race, starting at 10 a.m., on the Mark Foy system. The course will be from the Gladstone Pier out to the whistling buoy and back. Shops Open Christmas Eve. Drapery, mercery, stationery, and bootmakers' shops in Lyttelton have been granted permission by thj Labour Department to remain open on the afternoon and evening of Saturday week, December 24th, until 10 o'clock. They will close for the half-day on Tuesday. Owing to the terms of their awards, grocers and butchers are not included in the permit, and will be closed on Saturday afternoon and evening. Holy Trinity Church. The anniversary of the arrival of tho First Four Ships will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Church on Sunday. There will bo Holy Communion at 8 a.m. and Choral Communion at 11 a.m., the preacher being tho Eev. O. Fitzgerald, vicar of Avonside. The Mayor and Councillors will attend the evening service, when the Bishop of Christchurch will preach. At the evening servico a retiring collection will be made in aid of the Mayor's Belief Fund. Christmas Relief. Contributions to the Mayor's Belief Fund for the assistance of families in indigent circumstances at Christmas time are coming in satisfactorily, the Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton) stated yesterday. Mr Sutton has already received donations in cash and promises of goods. The depot will bo open for the receipt of goods on Tuesday and Thursday, and the goods will be distributed on Friday morning. The committee is in need of sugarbags. \ Swimming. The Lyttelton Amateur Men's Swim- j ming Club is receiving good support this soason from its active members, and for a 50 yards handicap race held at Corsair Bay last evening 14 competitors started. The prize-giving ceremonies oi the West Lyttelton School were held yesterday afternoon and evening. In the afternoon the pupils of the infant department were entertained at a Christmas tree party and there was a large attendance of mothers. Songs, recitations, and dances were given by the pupils and gifts from a large Christmas tree were distributed by Father Christmas. . , , . \. a „ St. Saviour's Hall was crowded last evening when the presentation of prizes to theolder pupils was held. At the proficiency examinations the examiners, made special mention of the artistic scenic drawings of John Olson and Lesbert Beaumont. • Xyttelton District High School. ; The annual break-up ceremony of the primary and secondary departments of the Lyttelton District High School was held in the playground yesterday afternoon. There was a full attendance of pupils and a fair attendance of parents. Mr W. T. Lester, chairman of the School Committee, who presided, introduced Mr A. F. Barrell, who lately took up the headmastership of the school, and Mr J. McOombs, M.P. Mr McCombs gave an address on the economic situation, Btating that the world was on the threshold of a new civilisation and that the present depression would paßs when a solution of the problem of the distribution of the world's food supplies was solved. Mr W." Clarke, Master of the Kilwinning Masonic Lodge, presented a medal on behalf of the lodge to the dux girl, Veronica Barnes. The dux boy, Leslie Sales, is at present in the Christchurch Hospital and will receive his medal later. The Mayor s (Mr F. E. Sutton) prize for the dux of the secondary department was awarded to Nona Carson, and a special prize, also given by the Mayor, was awarded to Ethel Davies. Sports trophies were presented by the donor, Mr E. O. Brown, to Gwen Norris and Harry Cave. The headmaster, Mr A. F. Barrell, drew the attention of pareuts of pupils who were finishing their primary schooling to tho advantages of the school's secondary department.
