MOTOR UNION.

MEETING OP EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the executive of the South Island Motor Union was held last night, when there were prosent: Messrs F. W. Johnston (chairman), W. L. Minson, H. 0. Hariey, E. H. Parker, E. Falck, G. Henderson, W. it. Carey, J, S. Hawkes, and F. W. Freeman. The Main Highways Board wrote stating that the Washdykc bridge had been flooded on only four occasions within tho past ten years. The Board considered that flooding was bo infrequent that any appreciable expenditure was unjustified. The Winchester bridge was subject to flooding on two occasions—in July, 1921), and in May, 1932. There was a detour at Orari, which was only two miles longer. The position could be improved by an expenditure of approximately £IOO, and the Board was taking the matter up -with the local County Council. To ameliorate flooding at the Pareora bridge, considerable expenditure would be involved. The Board did not think any largo expenditure was justified. tt was decided to write to the Goveminent concerning third party risk in its bearing on the negligent motorist who himself is killed, and who has been tho author of damage to another party. The Otago Motor Club forwarded a letter setting out the decision of the , Transport Appeal Board in a Central Otago case. The letter stated: "The decisions in several flagrant cases seem so much opposed to the ordinary ethics of business that it would appear impossiblo for such proposals to be put into law. If this Transport Bill became law, wc would soon have the taxis, expressmen, and all other businesses restricted to a fortunate few, which will have a tendency to croato a monopoly. The chairman said that the proposed transport regulations would stifle competition, and would bo a retrogrado St lt' was decided to ask the North Island Motor Union to co-operate with the executive and the Road Transport Alliance in opposing the regulations.
