A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF GENERAL COMMITTEE. The General Committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association met yesterday, Mr VT. ,T. Jenkins presiding. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £740 3s Bd. The Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Association" wrote asking for financial support for the importation of a parasite to combat the white butterfly pest, following the research work done by Mr J. Muggeridge. The parasite would hayo to be imported from Europe, and to ensure a regular supply more money was required than the £.IOO provided by the Government. A donation of £1 or £2 was asked for, and the fund so collected would be administered from Xapier. Mr J. D. Hall: The amount asked for i? small enough, but the principle is wrong. We should not be asked to do a thing that is surely the job of the Research Department of the Department of Agriculture, which has been established for the purpose. Mr J. Parlane said he could not agree with Mr Hall. "It is our business as farmers, if we are losing our 'turnip crops; to see what can be done to combat the pest. We should not always leave things to the pepartment of Agriculture. Of c.ourse, there is need to be careful that we do not import a worse pest than the one we have already. An example is to be found in the "ladybirds which were brought out to combat a pest, but which are now becoming rather a pest themselves." A motion that the Association should provide £2, as asked in the letter, was lost on the voices. The New Zealand Friesian Association wrote expressing its thanks for the improvement effected to the cattle pavilion at the Show by erecting boards along the back of the stalls. The New Zealand Pig Breeders' Association advised that the Perrett Shield for most points in the purebred Berkshire class had been allotted to the Canterbury Show for 1933, and the Shorthorn Society of the United Kingdom advised that it would give a geld medal for competition at the Show. Two life members and 17 ordinary members were elected.
