Lawry, S.M., with being in possession of utensils for use in the smoking of opium. lie pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant J. Fox baid that Sergeant Moore and three constables visited the accused's place in Avondale road, Now Brighton, yesterday morning. In a room at the rear they found a complete smoking outfit, including senlcs. a considerable quantity of prepared opium in a jar, and twelve empty jars indicating; that smoking was carried on extensively. The police information was that other Chinese were going there. The accused admitted that others visited tho place, but denied that ■ there were many. Chung lived alone, but in the place there were a number of bods to accommodate smokers. Tie had not been before the Court before and seemed to be a fairlv decent sort of Chinese. The Magistrate said that lie would take into account the fact that it was the first time the accused had been before the Court, that he had pleaded guilty, and that he had not barrica'ded his premises. The accused Was allowed n' month to pay the fine, with a condition that he report to the police once a week.
