WOOL SALE.

IRREGULAR AUCTION. SUPERFINE WOOLS IN DEMAND. LOW PRICES FOR CROSSBRED. "I he first C'hristchurch sale of this -eason's series was commenced yesterday at 2 p.m. in the Caledonian Hall, Kilmore street, and concluded at 10.20. The spectators' gallery was packed with farmers and others interested, the sale, under the conditions prevailing, being invested with much more interest than is usually the ,-ase. There was a full bench of buyers, a strong representation from Jot-id mills, which had a dominating iniluence on the competition for super wools. The catalogue and the order of sale Hire as follows: — Bales. il. Mutsou and Co. •• 2,i1l Dalgcty uad Co., Ltd. .. ryno, Gould, Guinness, Lid. .. 7 ; 55S National Alortgage and Agency Co., Ltd. . . • - 2.704 New Zealand Loan and Z>lercantile Agency Co., Ltd. •• 2,0(2 New Zealand Farmers' Co-oper-ative Association, Ltd. . • 4,434 Total •• •• 25,000 The catalogue' was fully up to the standard of the offering at the first-of-season 's sales, and contained some atvlish wools. Prices over the first part of the sale were disappointing. Little Avas expected in regard to the demand for crossbred and expectations were completely realised, as the demand was poor in the extreme. Fortunately the catalogue contained only a small portion of the coarser grades. Based on the "Wellington prices for the small amount of ordinary halfbred forward at that centre, a better standard of values was expected yesterday at the opening o-f the sale for 505S wools. A big proportion of these wools ranged about 9d, which, it vvas confidently expected, would be near lOd, Only super lots, however, made prices in excess of lOd, until after the had been about a couple of hours in progress. The New Zealand mill representatives. who generally set the pace for high quality wools, were more restrained yesterday in the early part of the auction, and showed very little disposition to pay fancy prices. After the tea adjournment, however, some outstanding clips were offered, and the matter of a fraction or so did not stop the Dominion mill representatives in their competition. The good prices thev set seemed to have a stimulating effect on the competition generally for the higher quality wools, and there was aa advance on an average of a haltpenny for this class. As an. illustration of this the top priced lot of one particular clip early in the sale made 101 d, and later in the day a similar classing of the same clip sold at Lid. For wools that did not come withm the top category the improvement was smaller, but for this class the benefit of the local competition was not pres'"coarse wool met with a dragging sale, and on occasions a bid was elicited with difficulty. The best of the crossbred sold at 4d to od, but the bulk of it ranged for 2Jd to 3Jd. The purchasers of it were well distributed. Pieces took the same co " r ® e a fleece. Good pieces sold well, but at a bigger disparity on fleece than has been usual in the past, but low grade made poor prices. In cases, however, there was only a negligible difierence in the value of coarse fleece and pieces. Top Prices. The third catalogue was nearly halfway through when the 10ad mark was exceeded. For three lots of Bowen Valley (Mrs J. F. Seott], totalling lo bales, ll?d was secured. This clip made to ll}d last year, being a farthing under the top figure. Later Imles of Pahau Pastures (Mr M. Betliell) Jytifbred ewe sold at I2d. Four hales of Pahau pieces made Bi-d. Top price of the sale was secured for live bales of Grassington clip (Mr Geo. lieid), seven bales of tlie necks making and nine of pieces B£d. Fourteen hales of Croftlea ewe sold at 12d and 11 at 113-d, whilst 10 bales of pieces equalled the top price of 83d. Ten bales of Cheviot Hills ewe (J. Connolly) sold at l'Jd. The Kilsyth clip (Mr J. A. Forrester) secured lljd for five Lai©6 and Hid for seven bales. This r-lip tonped the market last December at IHd. Top Corriedale price offered was IQJd for llvdal Downs, which Was r.ot accepted. Bri merino figure was 9d. There w;is very little merino in the market. Too price for necks was 9d. for bellies 7d, and for crutchings 4jd. The Buying Points. The Continental representatives secured the major weight of wool, France in particular being prominent, with German and Belgian operators also coming freely into the competition. Bradford secured a good proportion, and, as stated, the woollen mills set the pace for good and super wools. The Passings. Passings were heavy in the first two catalogues, comprising somewhat over 1100 bales in a, total of SOOO. The selling proportioij .improved later, and passings as a ranged about 10 per cent, of the total catalogue at the opening sale last year they were eight per cent. TO-MORROW'S SALE AT TIMARU. A total of 10,008 bales has been catalogued for the first Timaru wool salo of the season, which will be held in the Theatre Royal to-morrow evening, starting at 7 o'clock. The allocation for the sale was 10,000 bales, so that the quota for the first auction has been exceeded.

The offerings of the various firms in the order of sale is as follows: — j Bales. C.F.C.A., Ltd. .. •• 2,596 Dalgcty and Co., Ltd • • 2,446 Loan and Mercantile Co., Ltd. 464 National Mortgage and Agency Co. • • • ■ 2 > 400 Pvne, Gould, Guinness .. 2,102 Total .. •• 10,008 The wool has opened up lighter in condition and cleaner for this sale in comparison with the offering at the opening sale in Timaru last season, when, on account of the dry spell of weather the wool was earthy. The offering on Friday will comprise mainly halfbred, three-quarterbred, and crossbred, in which halfbreds are expected to sell best. NEW ZEALAND WOOL. REPLY TO CRITICISM. During the close season a certain amount of criticism has been levelled at tlig New Zealand wool clip, and allegations made regarding its apparent deterioration. The Christchurch Wool Brokers' Association make the following official statement: — It is not considered that the New Zealand wools have deteriorated in character, particularly in Canterbury, and we refer to Canterbury wools from now on. They have changed, but this change does not necessarily mean deterioration. The important bearing the fat lamb trade has upon the breeding of sheep is very evident to all interested in the wool trade, and it is in consequence of the development of this trade that the Canterbury wools hare changed in character. There is a complete absence of Lincoln wool offered for sale, and its place has been taken by English Leicester and Romaey crossbreds. The fact that Lincoln sheep is not so suitable for the producing of lambs and also the unattractive price for its wool in the sale rooms, has caused it to be discarded in favour of the aforementioned breeds. It must bo borne in mind that at no time is anv wool-producing country's fjeeces 100 per cent, perfect, and to-day, in Canterbury, there is no more, and we would ho inclined to say less, faulty wool than ever there was. The growing of green feed and turnips for ihe fattening of lambs is'always inclined to be the cause of a little more dust being apparent in the flocks. l>ut that is not a great fault, as iho staple is not impaired bv the pre-senr-e of such dust. It will always allow the flooee to scour perfectly white, and while detracting a little from the value of the wool, owing to a lower clean scoured yield, it still leaves, after scouring, a verv fine finished product.

Canterbury Clips. t One luii only to go through a ChristCiiiacji catalogue to see the thousauds uf bales of tirst-class halfbred and Corriedale wool, well grown, well bred, v/cll nourished, sound, and in a large number of cases extremely attractive ironi ail points of view. There is still, and always will be, a certain proportion of wasty, thin grown, ana hairy ueeces, due to the running out of these crossed breeds and careless selection of rams, Lut this position will doubtless always obtain.

The iact that Canterbury and its sister producing- fine wool* province, Utago, always secure top prices for fine wool sold in the Dominion, and also the keenness which these wools arouse, aIJ go to show that the clip is not cleteriorating. Canterbury wool-growers have lieen very well educated, and have i osponded very well, in the preparation oi their clips. It is only on rare occosions that one finds bellies and skirts feit in the fleece. Generally speaking, it is considered that the clip is as good °n er lt .. wafs, n °t bettor, and as equally well prepared for the market. LONDON SALES. CLOSE OF SERIES.
