SEATS FOR THE ORPHANAGES.

GIFTS FROM THE SUMMIT ROAD TRUST. One of the appreciated activities of the Summit Road Trust is tho manufacture of garden seats and their presentation to the City orphanages. Tho work is done by carpenters engaged on tho Trust's job, and tho seats are constructed out of .gift timber. chiefly strong case wood, and tho other materials, including plaint, are gifts. Mr 11. G. Ell told a reporter yesterday that Cr. J. \V. Beanland, after examining some of the seats, expressed tho opinion that they were soundly and well constructed. Recently Sister May, of St. Saviour's Orphanage, wroto thanking the Trust for the gift of six seats, and stated that as there had been no garden seats at the orphanage before, she could assure the Trust that tliey would be appreciated. In addition, five seats were presented some time ago to the Cholmondeley Memorial Homo at Governor's Bay, a similar number to tho Methodist orphanage, a similar number to the Roman Catholic orphanage, and six to the Presbyterian orphanage—a total of twenty-seven. It i 3, perhaps, not. generally known that tho seat presented some time ago by the Trust for the use of citizens and placed on tho footway in front of 'the Godley statue reserve in Cathedral square, is a replica of one of the latest designs by Gordon Russell, the noted architect of garden furniture. , Tho whole of the work, from the dressing of tho Jarrah log to the actual construction of the seat, is craft work. There is not a nail used in the seal, all the parts being pegged together. As a compliment to the craftsmen, Mr Ell had affixed to the seat the arms of the Carpenters' Company, one of the old trade guilds which dates back to the year 143 G.
